I just got some Dawn redwood seeds for next year. I am wondering what everyone’s ideas are for best germination practices?

Also does anyone have a progression from seed - seedling - tree? I can’t seem to find good timelines of them. I’m wondering how many years it’ll take to get a decent trunk. I know they are similar to BC So can you put on a few inches of girth in 1-2 years? How much girth do they put on each year?

Thanks!

I don't grow anything from seed, but have a few dawn redwoods. They are really aggressive growers and can trunk up relatively quick. Don't know exact figures, but the increase in girth is noticeably more than my other trees.

These will be three years old in my care in March 2023.
They were small about 5-6 inch seedlings when purchased.

I have both - and the Dawn Redwoods don't even come close to the growth that Bald Cypress put on. I have BC that grew an easy 2ft from seed this year..

I don't grow anything from seed so can't judge that. Both dawn redwood and BC are monster growers. With an established root system, I would imagine these would really grow. One of my Japanese maples put on almost 4 feet of growth after a chop this season in a grow box. A mulberry in my backyard that I chopped down last year and then buried in my used mulch grew at least 10 feet - it towers over me now. I don't believe 6 feet of growth on a dawn redwood (or BC) in a season is crazy and in fact it should grow much more aggressively than a JM.

I started with a rather small redwood stick in the dirt this spring and now have a mini Christmas tree. Granted it's in a larger pot than I started, but it's now up to my neck and a few feet wide. Base of the trunk is probably just shy of an inch. I'm shooting for a rather large tree and so will let it grow for a few more years before I even think about chopping (or even repotting).

Just a note I forgot to place in my first post,
The seedlings were chopped by 50 % and the next two seasons they were also reducing 50 % or more.
The cutting were were placed in Gordon’s blocks with clonex, my strike rate was 90% or better.

These will be one year old from cuttings in November, cuttings taken November 2021.

Thanks
