Hello all and what a wonderful community here. I am looking for some friends that might be in the lower southern states that have mild winters I can follow on here for some advice; I try to not be a bother. Also, what is the best book recommendations you have read on Bonsai?
Thanks

Welcome and be a bother all you want. If we did not like it we would leave. ;-) I have pretty mild winters here in Vegas, (like 2 weeks worth). I would be happy to share what I know which is not much mind you.

Ask away and you got to pick someone's brain to learn and annoy us:p

Dallas is ground zero for some great bonsai. Have you considered joining the Dallas Bonsai Society?

I don't want to mislead you on books because there is some great learning to be had. But if you really want to understand the art, there is nothing like joining a society or club. You will learn more in one year than you would learn reading books for ten years.

Mr wind-up bird ,

After being wound , do the legs move, the wings, or both?

There's a lot of books, but they contain old techniques, busted myths, and opinions just as blogs websites, clubs, etc.

IMO you have to take it ALL in, then omit nonsense, and do a lot of hands on things to teach YOU and your garden to grow perfect!

Welcome to crazy , this is the best place to be!

I'm in South Louisiana, which has many similarities to the Dallas climate. I think your summers are drier and usually hotter than ours, at least that's what I remember when I used to come over there to work on private collections years ago. And your winters can be a good deal harsher. But for all the in-between, what goes here goes there. Check out my website. I post blogs frequently which you might find useful.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of bonsai!

Zach

By all means do look into the Dallas Bonsai society. They have their meetings on the first Saturday of the month at North Haven Gardens. Books can be misleading because most are written for the authors climate and that can be much different than yours.
