Thanks for the consideration. I think that once it has partly leafed out, it's awake and it's lost its cold hardiness. I looked at the weather report, and this week is supposed to be warm, so it shouldn't be a concern, anyway.

We're still getting nighttime temperatures below freezing, but I'd imagine it would be fine indoors under a grow light for a few weeks.

If you want to register a new Japanese maple cultivar, you have to go through the International Maple society and register consistent with ICNCP rules. There are restrictions, since just like in this case, anyone with a pretty seedling could declare it a new cultivar.
