Hi Everyone,

I have about 10 cutting grown Japanese maples with nice orange leaves that I am selling. These cuttings are from a special seedling I bought at at local nursery in spring of 2022. They have nice small leaves and beautiful orange spring color. Summer Color is light green. Fall color is usually purple/maroon. The original parent plant has thickened nicely over the past few years despite being pruned back regularly, so I am confident that this variety will thicken quickly.
Since I only have 10 of these I would like to sell them for $30 each plus shipping. They are well rooted in 2" plastic pots. please see attached pictures of this variety and the cuttings being offered.
If interested send me a PM here. Alternatively, I will be posting these for sale on my website soon.

Thanks,
Adam

Its not a cultivar just a chance seedling I found!
I suspect its a seedling from Katsura as the nursery i found it at grows a lot of katsura, but I’m not certain. I can say the spring color makes katsura look boring by comparison.

Hi Adam,
I just purchased two of these from your site. I'm a sucker for great spring color maples! Looking forward to seeing your work! :)

Thanks @Dan W. ! I will get then packaged up and shipped out to you ASAP. I an also a sucker for the spring color maples. You won’t be disappointed with this variety!

Are you thinking about introducing this as a registered cultivar down the road? I'm happy to compare it to some of my others and pass along any thoughts or observations if you consider it. I have Marmalade, and a few others that can be orange in the spring, but none that go purple/maroon in the fall that I'm aware of so far. I have a few name ideas for you if you consider it. 😂

I've considered it, but I don't know the process of registering one. I have a few name ideas too, but would love to hear your ideas! I tagged it as 'Piedmont Select' but definitely haven't officially named it that.

here are some photos of the fall color on a few of these cuttings. definitely maroon in there and some red

I like it!
'Piedmont Orange' is the first that came to mind.
I think 'Tang' would be a pretty cool name for an orange cultivar as well.
I don't really know the process either, but I know the Mr. Maple guys would probably be happy to help you out. You're probably not too far from them either. And I can do some digging. I'm pretty sure that I've seen information on it somewhere; possibly in the Maple Society website.

If you look into it or see any info on it let me know! I need to reach out to the guys at Mr. Maple about it. Their nursery is near asheville, nc about 3 hours from me. Maybe they can start propagating it at their place too.

Also I shipped out your cuttings yesterday morning. You should have gotten a tracking number emailed to you

Will do. I'm sure they would put it into their evaluation system. They evaluate anything new like that next to the five closest cultivars over a number of years to see if it differs enough to justify entry as a new cultivar (in their opinion of course). But it makes sense to me. Even if they don't think it should be listed, there's no reason you can't market it yourself, especially grown for bonsai purposes.

And thank you, I did. it looks like they should get here Tuesday. :)

I want one (orange is my favorite color) but I'm hesitant to buy a tree that's already leafed out, when everything around here is still dormant. I don't want it to suffer frost damage in transit.

Understandable, though it would be ok from cold in transit. The real concern at this point is hard frost on the leaves

We're still getting nighttime temperatures below freezing, but I'd imagine it would be fine indoors under a grow light for a few weeks.

You could try that or move them into a unheated garage or shed at night. We had some night time temps in the 30s this week and i have just been moving all my cuttings into the garage.
