I have a small forest in a cedar pot. I didn't make it but it is good quality. It's sealed with what I assume is poly. I like it. I expect it to hold up.

Composite decking material

You may want to look into using composite decking materials. I don't know if you could make something as nice as these, but may be something to look into.

Not a bad idea...I'll try one out. I need to post shots of redesigned bottoms.
