This one was on sale at MrMaple.com, and I decided to give it a go. It is grafted and the graft looks to have some bark as well (I was expecting it to be grafted into some green maple). I received it 12 June and the last picture is as of yesterday 22 June, so far I see no burn on the leaves, and we have been on the 90's for the entire time. This weekend I moved it into a 1 gal Rootpouch with all inorganic soil (pumice, with bonsai block and monto clay from Bonsai Jack). This came in a 1 gal container that was not full, so I just teased the roots in the bottom and sides and moved into the Rootpouch. There is still some organic soil in it, but I plan on ground-layering it.

Maiden69, how has your Hubble Super Cork done over the past year? I'm new to this and recently picked up a Super Cork. How many hours of sun is yours getting? Any issue with leaf burning? Since it's a new cultivar, there not that much information on it. Am in North Texas and am trying to figure out how much sun to give mine. Any update you can give is appreciated.

The amount of sun will vary depending on the exact area you are in. Update your location on your profile so it will show below your avatar.

My trees are doing fine so far, but Japanese maples don't take too much sun here in TX, I know there are a lot of maples around the northern area or Dallas. I think there is a nursery in Dallas that do sell a lot of JM. Here in central TX I have both my JM under dappled sun, under the trees (a cherry, trident, and peach tree) that I am growing in a raised be. So they don't get any direct sunlight. Last year I had them under a small oak tree and the leaves tips did scorch at the peak of summer.

Thanks. Very helpful. I live on the border of 8a/8b here in Dallas. Metro Maples near Fort Worth has the best selection of Japanese Maples in these parts. I've had luck with JM Sango Kaku and Tamukeyama in direct sun. My others are in shade. I think I'll keep the Hubble's Super Cork in partial shade as well.

Hubbles super cork was a chance seedling of Arakawa found at Metro Maples. You may want to ask them about it’s sun tolerance as well.

Great thought, Adam D. I reach out to Scott Hubble at Metro Maple. He thought it could tolerate the amount sun where I wanted to place it. The bark and the leaves on this tree are just stunning, IMO, so I want to find a spot to showcase it. Nice to learn I have more options than I expected. Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts, Adam

Hello all. My Hubble is in full sun, but we haven’t got to the full sunny season in the PNW. I did have a shade tarp up last year on my maples. This year I am going see how they do in full for the entire year.

Apologies on the rotation of the image.

Absolutely stunning photo!

Weather this summer was brutal in Dallas; just 2-3 hours of full sun was scorching my Super Cork's leaves. Moved it to a location where it got filtered sun all day and it rebounded.

I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I've got family in Bwood. My mom is actually buried there. There is a 15' multitrunk cedar right by her grave I'd like to somewhat prune to a nice shape.

Sorry for the thread hijack, back to corky maples! Maiden how have yours done through the crazy hot summer we had?

They had a few leaves burned, but I have it under the shade of my "in-ground" trident and Yoshino tree. I am building a small above-ground planter next to the east side wall of the house to move the maples and chojubais there.

Pics from the end of July. New summer push not happy with the 100 degree weather.

Forming some cork on the nodes... planning to airlayer at that node to make a twin trunk and remove it from the graft.

My kotohime was not happy about the weather either.

Just one pic to update, but compared with last years July picture, this tree is doing way better this July, it is also entirely under the shade of my yoshino, peach, and trident trees which may be part of the reason why. This tree will be air layers soon and depending on root development separated in fall or next spring. GIngko's are not happy... they were moved into the same shade right before this pic. Trident seedlings are pushing new growth at 100+ degrees... go figure.

Bonus pics until I make a thread for it. My kotohime from Matt O (I think it is from Bill's tree) is doing good this year under the same trees. Roots escaped the pot and went into the mulch, this one will have to be repotted in spring. Looking at this pic I think I am going to start covering the top of the mulch with weed fabric to prevent so many weeds from sprouting. Yoshino trunk right behind and to the right, and Seiju elm behind on the left.

Cork is slowly developing on the trunk... I'm going to airlayer the graft soon and contemplating wether to airlayer as a twin trunk as the top picture, or airlayer the lower portion as well as a single tree. Lots of elongating shoots up top, I am going to try to get some cuttings to root. The root stock is developing a branch and I think I am going to layer the top and do my best to save it. The leaves are healthier than the cork JM, which is a good sign here.

Cork update today. Probably going to layer this tree about an inch below the trunk split into twins or right below that junction. Then let it grow to get strong to start air layering branches.

Leafing out, first JM from the few I have to push flowers. It has a few clusters. Looking forward to air layering a few branches this spring along with the kotohime.

I also did a cutting from one of the longer branches late winter and stuck it in the perlite, it's opening buds but I am not holding my breath yet...

The bark looks great. Must be tough to grow that many trees in that small enclosure. When will you close on your house?

Yes, this one barks out pretty early on, the new branches from the first year I had it are already developing some bark.

Yes, it really sucks, I have no space for nothing. And I still have about 8 seedlings growing in the closet with the 4 ficus trees that I should be bringing out after next week that we will be out of the few 40 degree weather days.

House engineering red lines took forever, they are supposed to start breaking ground this week, when we were scheduled to do so mid-late December. The tentative closing is the end of August... it is going to be chaos watering the trees every day, I may set up a 50% shade on the fence to prevent them from perspiring too much. Don't know if it will work thought

Looks like you are in for a rough ride this summer....but if anyone can do it, it probably be you. With all that going on you still able to repot trees

How old is your Hubble's Super Cork?

I don't know, because all the maples from Mr Maple are grafted, so there is no way to know how old was tree where the scion came from. I received it June 2021 in a 1 gallon container.
