Cool product for sketching out a tree's future design

Lately I've been trying to find a good way to sketch out possible futures for some of my trees. I'm not the best at drawing from life, but I'm pretty good at tracing.

So I was excited to find this product on Kickstarter this weekend, and thought some of you might be interested too:

They're basically big post it notes made of tracing paper, and sized to fit on an iPhone or iPad (though if they get enough backers, the creators are going to produce versions for other devices as well). So you can pull up a photo of your tree's current state and trace the basic structure, then easily sketch out the different design possibilities!

I have no affiliation with the product except for backing them on Kickstarter, by the way, just think it's a great idea that could prove useful to other folks like me.

Yeah, one could hold up a piece of plexi glass in front of their tree and draw on it
with a sharpie... No need for spending money on a camera, an I-pad, or this new device...
But if gadgets are your thing and you gotta have one, I say sure why not.

It's not a device, it's basically just a pad of tracing paper, just one designed to be easy to use with a smartphone or tablet. Of course if you don't already have & use one of those devices, this product is of no interest to you.

Personally, I would find the plexiglass method too cumbersome, so I'm happy to have found the tracing pad. Not saying anybody NEEDS it, just that I think it's cool and I want some for myself.

I was just about to say the same thing... I wouldn't feel too good about tracing on a touch screen either.

Does look cool I agree. We are gadget orientated at my house, Droid tablet, phone, Netbook, Mp3 players, and two screaming cool pc's with dual monitors and goodies, Wireless portable Bluetooth speakers that hook to all. My Wife has a 400 watt Fender custom audio system in the car as well, 8 speakers and a subwoofer, Bluetooth phone hookup, nav, and SD, CD, etc... PS2, 3, and 4! I don't need it but I am 100 percent certain she will get it. Thank you for sharing

I think it a great idea. I use a Kendel Fire. Slightly smaller than Apple but I think the paper will fit.

My screen is made of something akin to Gorilla Glass. Can't see how using a pencil to sketch on tracing paper on that would be an issue. I went ahead and gave the guy $25 for three packs of paper.

Hope it is a successful venture. Pitchpine, thanks for bringing it up and posting the link with your idea of how to apply it to bonsai.

Yeah, I don't have any i-gadgets either, but I think the sheets for the ipad mini cut in half will fit well on my phone.

One of the reasons this product work so well for me is I can just keep a pad of the sheets in my purse, and be able to work on bonsai designs easily during my daily hour-each-way commute on the train, so I really hope the project gets funded!

Yeah, if the kickstarter project doesn't wind up going forward, I might try to make my own version with cut down tracing paper and double-stick tape. But it would be easier to have the pre-made version---and I think they have a reasonable price.

I'm not worried about damage to the touch screen, but I guess it would depend on how hard you tend to press when writing/drawing.

I was just about to say the same thing... I wouldn't feel too good about tracing on a touch screen either.

Hi Laura,
I'm no artist nor a gadget guy either......... I find it easy to print a photo (8"*11") of my tree and then use my sliding glass door as a light table to sketch the basic outline and branch location.
I've attached a copy of one that I did a few years back.
