Cool bark on nursery JBP

Saw this cool looking old japanese black pine at a nursery today, the bark was pretty interesting IMO. Any ideas on how long it takes to form that kind of bark?

It appears to me to be a wound with a lot of resin on it. The tree is trying to roll over the wound with fresh growth.

yes, i noticed the waterfall of sap running down that section- i guess its been sitting at the nursery for a while, getting knocked around and or messed with.
