That pot looks fit for a pirate's treasure, and the tree will be a treasure one day.

From what people have said on here carving vines is not a good idea since their wood breaks down easily.

It’s soooo heavy. It’s gotta be a ton of water weight in the trunk. I used half potting soil half my regular bonsai mix, per @rockm .

Any updates on this tree? How's it doing?

It’s doing well. Here’s a current picture.

I lost maybe 20% of shoots that grew last year. The dead branches would literally pull off with a small chunk of trunk with it. I chopped back the living to about 1.5 ft before bud swell.

I’m going to let it go wild for another season and see if I get more die off.
