i have very little experience in bonsai but quite a bit of experience in growing and working with many kinds of plants. Here is an elm that I collected today and "styled". I know it is in the very beginning of its stages of a bonsai. It is by all means starter material. Input and advise is welcomed!

Another collected today and "styled". The things I said earlier still all apply. These two trees were collected from an old abandoned rock quarry that I do have permission to do whatever I want with. There are so many possibilities for starter material on the property. If these two don't happen to live, I will simply go collect more.

These last three pictures are trees I collected from an old factory parking lot. Yes, I do have permission to take what I want, thankfully I have quite a few resources in my area with somewhat extreme living conditions. These three were collected just over a year ago, plucked through the cracks of the parking lot. After a hard summer with not s lot of growth last year, they are slowly coming along. The last picture...I recently defoliated almost the entire right side of my plant. Hoping to reduce leaf size more.

Collecting is cool but before anyone can advise or comment you really need to add your basic location and USDA Zone to your profile so we can all see it like in mine ;) Serious - there are many here interested with years of knowledge! Welcome to B-Nut!

Oh! Sorry, new to this particular forum..seems more open and accepting than another I am a member of (won't point fingers). Just to keep a good thing going, I live in south east michigan. Will enter all my info after I post this.

I do hope they live. Although it is the wrong time of year to collect trees. If they don't make wait to collect another. They can take a lot of abuse but even this may be too much.
You do have a couple nice stumps though. Good eye. If they do pull through be prepared to cut the remaining branches way back or off all together. They don't have taper. But if you cut them back they will grow back.

Thanks. I'm hoping they do as well, lol. Pk have a few others I collected last summer around the same time that survived..only time will tell. I got antsy with the day off today and spontaneously went out with my younger brother. I'll post some progress pics as the trees develop, if that do

First one. Last pic. Id layer it at the green wire in the future.

I collected one late myself and its bangin out growth, got ALL the roots though.

Your partial defoliation should help.

So...I get really bored on my days off and couldn't resist. I visited my parking lot, again..the first pic is the actual lot. Basically, all the green is elms. I found three I wanted and brought them home. I did a hard cut back and am now letting them sit.

On a side not, the elms are getting hard to collect. Last season I could just pluck them right out..the roots uses are much more developed and thicker under the cement. Shy of busting a bunch of cement up I don't know how I could go about collected many more. Any thoughts?

If they ain't going anywhere for a while. I would start layering them there. Now!

Let the bottoms grow out next year and get them too!
