Hi guys I have Field grown maple clumps, fused together seedlings in the ground for a couple of years and now am unsure how to get nice taper, whether to smash them down or have ugly cuts. Do cuts matter? Roasting is welcome as I need criticism and ideas. Thanks

Welcome Aboard Bonsai Nut!!! That’s a good start on these trees!

Maple design is generally falls in two patterns

”Design by a thousand small cuts”. Whereby the entire tree is basically clip and grow. This method can produce artful, delicate designs.

“Design by a 800 small cuts and some big ones too.” This procedure is similar but also features the use of successive sacrifices on apex’s to foster trunk caliber and chops.

One caution. In every case be sure to cut a bit off the actual cut site each time, between internodes, then let the section die off vs cut smooth against the trunk. Cuts heal better and this procedure will help avoid infection of the trunk.

Finally please enter your approximate location and USDA plant hardiness zone by clicking on your icon atop the page, then account details and scroll until you see these areas. Enter and save.

This information will help us help you in the future.

Hey thanks alot for that, it makes me feel better about the chopping which I know is necessary but it's always a hesitation haha. I would have thought callousing can initiate faster the braver you are to cut close to live wood. I'm in new Zealand
