Burford Holly – It’s Do or Die Time

Back in September 2014 I collected this Burford Holly for no other reason than to see if it would live. Someone wanted it removed, so I removed it. Not really an ideal tree for bonsai because the leaves are kind of big but since the tree is so big they don’t look too bad. For nearly four years it has just sat in a pot and once or twice a year I would cut it back. I never thought I’d have to repot it but it has survived and it needed to be done. Reluctantly, I decided to tackle it today. In the pot it weighed well over 100 pounds. It took four hours to clean all the old soil from the roots and prune them to fit the new pot. All I can say is I don’t want another tree like that ever again.. Not some magical transformation but here’s the before and after:
