If you haven't been by Zach Smith's website in a while, make the trip. He's got some really interesting stuff on there, from October collection experiments, to killer water elms and a really nice southern live oak bonsai.

Always interesting stuff coming out of La. and shows there is more to North American collection than just western conifers.

damn i wish loblolly was more cold hardy I liked the first one

I really like the live oak. Don't see many of them around.
That's a great testimony to my late friend, Mark. I've actually got a bunch of live oaks in the ground, and hopefully they'll be fat enough in another two or three years to start doing some serious work with them.

Thanks Rockm and Zach. I missed this thread. Found the blog looking to learn more on Ligustrum sinense. Nice blog! I like the American Beech. Adding your blog to my favorites.

@Zach Smith, does the ligustrum heal well from trunk chops or do they need to have wood carving in their future after a chop?

I have one ligustrum that I got a few years ago from Zach. Had a partly healed chop on the trunk. It is healing, slowly but steadily. I know that's a small sample size, but I recall Zach telling me they do heal but it takes time.

Larger privets often mean bigger chops, meaning it would be more likely you'd have to carve at some point (and possibly do some heroic wood preservation as well). Higher cuts do heal better. Lower bigger cuts invite rot, unfortunately. That's why I'm selective about the material I offer for sale.

Funny that privet should come up this evening. I just posted a blog about a big clump I lifted this afternoon.
