I would like a formal and systematic introduction to the practice of Bonsai. Having not found a very appealing free course so far, I have however seen two courses which seem particularly interesting, at a moderate cost. These are the course offered by Bonsai Empire, and the one by Bjorn Bjorholm I would like to know folks’ opinions on these, and also any recommendations of another course, whether free or paid (of moderate price, for now just an introduction) … Perhaps a course affiliated with this website, or taught by another member? Thus far I have only found tutorials here, which are awesome. Aagain though, I’m realizing that with all the methodology involved with Bonsai, an intro sequence, to lay a foundation would be great. Thanks in advance, for any recommended favorites. And Happy New Year All! 🌝🌎

So many teachers, gardens of Bonsai folks your general area. Surely must be able to find free or nearly free mentor in/through local Bonsai club😊? Bjorn good new generation practitioner but in person infinitely better. Be aware basic horticultural skill keeping plants in pots alive is THE first most necessary skill.

Hey, I have taken all the Bonsai Empire and Bjorn’s courses. I’d recommend the basic courses up through intermediate for new folks. The tuition pays for a lifetime subscription to each course bought, so you can go back over and over.

Also Bonsai Mirai’s Spring/summer/fall/winter care series. I believe these are on YouTube. Both these would be excellent supplements for a new bonsai hobbyest.

Yet as @Potawatomi13 was saying, bonsai is a hands on as well as a minds on discipline. Keeping trees alive is the name of the game. To help on the practical side you might first contact the Orange County Bonsai Society to connect with them about meetings and classes. Also one might see about taking a couple classes at the Huntington Library, it’s about an hour and a bit away up the 405. Finally, I know there are a couple bonsai shops near your location.

Good luck and let’s hear from you as you progress!

cheers
