My blue atlas cedar started new growth 3 months ago. Now in late September some of the needles have fallen off leaving just the new growth. Is this common? Also, the roots are a darkish brown. Should I be concerned?

It would help to post some pictures.

All conifers will drop old needles in the fall, usually the 3 year old ones. If they are all older, interior needles that look a bit beat up already, there’s no cause for concern.

It would be best to post a picture so comments could be based on observation and assessment. Just a thought.

Also would you please post your approximate location and USDA cold hardiness zone on your icon? This will also help us understand the environment the tree is in.

To do this click your icon atop the page, then account details. Next scroll down and enter these data and save.
