My wife asked what I wanted for my birthday, and I thought about it for a while. Eventually I asked for a budget for a new tree. Currently I have 2 baby junipers that I had shipped from Wigert's bonsai in florida, and a hinoki cypress I picked up from a local nursery. I've been looking around online but haven't found anything that really calls to me yet. Well there's that, and the fact that a lot of nurseries are local pickup only for trees that are older and larger. Given the age of my current trees, I'd really like to have something more 'finished' that I can enjoy looking at as my trees grow. I've been looking for something with plenty of foliage, preferably in nice pads. Nebari is cool, but pads are definitely something that I've longed for and don't yet have.

I prefer more upright/slanted trees, rather than anything cascading. I'm not picky about species, but most of the things I see in videos that I think look really cool just end up being junipers. I think I like them because they have foliage in all seasons. Like red maples are beautiful in the fall, cherry blossoms look amazing in bloom, but I really enjoy being able to see the tree looking the best it can all year round. I'd just go look at the local nursery I picked up my hinoki at, but they don't really have mature trees there, just a lot of shohin and pre bonsai, as well as some taller unstyled trees.

We've budgeted around 500-700 dollars, and I live in northeast ohio, about an hour south of cleveland. The weather here is typically colder from late september until february/march. The lowest I've seen temps go is -30 back in the early 2010s, but I'd say we spend most of the winter between 25-40 degrees F, with the colder weeks being down into the 5-15 degree range. I'm willing to travel 4-5 hours, or ideally would love to get something shipped. I know shipping can be a challenge, but to be honest, I'd pay 150 bucks to crate ship something if the alternative is 120 bucks in gas and a day of travel. I'd love suggestions for any online retailers that you folks find reputable who might have what I'm looking for, or I'd be up for a private sale if any of you have trees you'd be willing to part with. I'll also check out the sale threads section of the forum, but I figured posting first couldn't hurt.

A little about me, if it helps make you more willing to part with one of your prized possessions: I'm 32, I'm a software engineer by day, video game player by night, and my other hobbies aside from bonsai are mead making and pokemon card collecting (this one has been on the back burner for a while because monies lol). I have a wife and 5 children(13f, 12f, 9f, 5m, 3f) who keep my life relatively busy and my house loud, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Let's just say thank god I work from home, bussing and housework would be near impossible to handle otherwise.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask, and thank you in advance for any help you provide!

Happy Birthday and welcome to the forum. Nice birthday gift! @JudyB and @Cadillactaste both live in Ohio, maybe they can help with someone in Ohio. As for getting a tree shipped, I highly recommend Wigert's. They are reasonably priced and have all sorts of trees. If you are looking for somethin specific, just email them. They have way more than what is on their website.

Happy Birthday and happy shopping!

I think in your area of the country there is Hidden Gardens in Chicago area and Natures Way in PA. I’m sure there are other bonsai nurserys that I am just not aware of, but I believe those 2 are known for having good material. You can also find some good trees on the Facebook auction sites. Good luck!

Thank you! Birthday isn't for another month yet, but you know how bonsai goes, it's all about time with us, so I thought it couldn't hurt to start looking around. I appreciate the tags on the fellow ohioans, and the suggestion to email wigert's. I was VERY impressed with how they shipped the junipers I bought from them last year(albeit i was pretty surprised to see they weren't at all as large as I thought they'd be, but that's okay). They were really well packed, firm but gentle. I hadn't thought to just email them, so I'll do that. Thanks again!

When you say facebook auction sites, what do you mean? Just facebook groups where the focus is all buying and selling trees? If so, do you have any you recommend that I should join?

I'm totally brain fog right now on 7 different prescriptions for my lungs. I had stacked my used pots I transferred my trees from. For repots...in one place. As I did it at the dining room table. Carol...I couldn't even list what tree or recollect what they looked like. That come from any empty pots in that stack. My memory right now...until I'm off these. Is scary absent. As I transferred the pots into the greenhouse yesterday. Once in the greenhouse...I could see which were done. But...came back into the house...and couldn't tell you again. I'm pretty useless right now.

Yes...you can get really quality trees off Bonsai Auctions. For your price point... this would be where you would want to look. Now...there is scammers making aliases of sellers right now. That needs understood. Trying to sell their trees in messages. Stick to the platform when buying trees. I then make contact through messenger from my auction I won. To ensure I pay the rightful seller.

The last few trees that I added...came from their platform. Higher end trees...and such run through there.

That said...northerner you are. How do you intend to winter this tree? Will help you make a wise decision on selecting a species. Getting it through our winters are key to success. Choosing trees in the means you can offer winter protection will set you up for success.

You could still invest your budget into quality bonsai tools, wires, .. and maybe some good online bonsai learning platform to learn from. You could buy few humble starters and learn by developing them. Sometimes good tree without knowledge is a dead tree in a few years. Just another option to consider ;)

Nice pair of concave cutters...go a long way. Some nice shears. Though actually my go to are cheap ones Adair had me buy...wire cutters. I don't use half the tools that came in my kit. A folding saw...yeah good investment. Buy a less quality tree...one might still get good prebonsai stock.

That maple...was $220 plus shipping (Slanted tree) a good buy. With a 3 inch trunk where the roots end. I feel it was given away. It's why...I didn't expect it to be so thick of a trunk. Good buys come up too.

You may want to think about becoming a member of the Cleveland Bonsai Club. They meet the 4th Saturday at the Rockefeller Greenhouse 9:30am. They’re an active group and very helpful for beginners.

Sounds like you are in similar area to me as well. There is a bonsai seller in Kent which would be fairly close to you. Not sure what all he has as I got just some starter material from him. Lucky-bonsai

Rohrs nursery on portage in canton also sells some bonsai material and there is one guy there that is their specialist in that area.

Yeah, lucky is where I got my hinoki. He seems to have a ton of starter material, I didn't notice anything beyond that. Not that there's anything wrong with starter material, but I have a few starters, and my goal is to have something more established to enjoy while I wait for my others to grow.

Agree mostly starter material. Rohrs nursery have had some larger material at reasonable prices in past. I got A European hornbeam last year there

How long is average meeting? What is agenda? I’m in canton myself so might try to stop by.

It seems unlikely that I'll make it out anytime soon. With 5 kids I basically have no life outside of being a parent, it's the hobbies that I can do at home that keep me sane. Leaving the wife saddled with them alone while I go enjoy myself just ends up making me feel guilty because I hate when she does it to me lol. They're so overwhelming.

You may still want to go to their exhibitions. They have vendors and a club table where members sell their trees and related gear at bargain prices. You can make it a family outing and show them what this little tree thing is all about. You can follow them on Facebook to find out when and where.

Yes, exactly. Here is a screenshot of the group page. I think you may have to submit a request to join, can’t remember for sure.

The auction starts every Tuesday evening. Here is an example from last week of a juniper in your price range, just to give you an idea of what you can find on there:

Welcome to the forum. This is an amazing place, filled with dedicated hobbyists of all skill levels, bonsai professionals, and ceramic artists from all parts of the world. Some of the folks here have been doing bonsai for decades and have lots of experience to share. You have already received some great advice from the posts above, especially about joining a local bonsai club or society. Before joining our local club, I had muddled along for several years, trying to learn what I could reading books, and killing lots of trees. Then I discovered YouTube; which has some good podcasts by knowledgeable professionals, but still a lot of conflicting information. My bonsai hobby really took off when I joined our local club. There I learned what are probably the two most important principles of bonsai: patience and timing; as well as the critical influence of the climatic zone you are located in. Here is where the shared experience of your fellow members really pays off. This can save you the frustration of killing trees by doing work at
the wrong time of year and trying to grow species that are just not going to survive in your climate, no matter how you treat them. Finally, I have to say that I admire your desire to bonsai while raising a family. I didn't start on my hobby until most of my four sons were out of the house, but have only had the time to really dive into it since retiring about five years ago. One benefit for you might be that at least one of your kids might take an interest in bonsai and it could become something that you could do together. I have one son who has done just that and I enjoy our time working on trees with him when he can fit it into his busy schedule.

Yeah, you have to submit a request, I've had one pending for a couple days since that comment was made. Honestly this tree is great, I'd have bid on that. I'm looking forward to getting accepted there so I can have a look.
