This oak was grown from seed(acorn) and I bent it over a rock for a year. I think the three long branches should be cut back. I think that they should be taken off after the second node from main trunk ? This should be done after the leaves drop, yes ? Any and all advice gratefully accepted !
Thanks for looking in !image.jpg

The best time to prune is spring, right before the buds start swelling. If you just have to prune it this fall, yes, wait till after leaf drop.

Why would you want to prune them?
Oaks can bud from ancient wood, so everything that's here right now will help fuel the trunk growth. Cutting back in 10 years will leave the same ability to grow new branches :)

My thought was that by pruning the longer branches, it would keep the tree more proportionally correct. I see what you say to be the best for long term health, and growth. You helped me see a better perspective, and happier future for this tree.
