Hi all, I’m wondering if anybody has found any trustworthy and credible sources of Beni Chidori JM trees here in the states. Post any links or sources in the comments, please and thanks!

I don't know how is the importation bonsai market in the US, specially with the pandemic that i believe slowed down everything these last 2 years, but i would contact any serious bonsai nursery and ask if they have one, and if not, i'd ask them to try to get you one next time they order trees from Japan.

Some japanese nurseries are definitely growing this cultivar as prebonsai right now so unless they are for the local market only, which i doubt, i believe a few could appear at some point as long as importation is still a thing.

The good thing i find about these beautiful maples is that they are rare and not easy to find.

That makes them special and desired and you have to work your way to find one.
It will give you a nice feeling once you get your hands on one.

Maybe you could also just try to find one from a nursery that sell ornamental Japanese maples and start your own from airlayer.

For sure, i suppose that’s going to be my best bet then, thanks a ton for the insight!

You are welcome,
It took me 10 years to be able to afford and find one so don't give up and give it time!

I sent several hundred 'Beni Chidori' to the USA in 2022. They were sent to bonsai societies and a bonsai professional. I assume that at least some will begin appearing in the market in 2023 and 2024.

I will be sending 'Seigen' Japanese Maples in 2023, as well as more 'Beni Chidori' among other varieties.

Yes, they were sent 100% legally, following all of the strict CFIA and USDA requirements. In fact, the trees underwent treatment and inspection that far exceeded the official requirements.

There is some info here for those who might be interested. I am almost at max capacity for 2023.

By chance, would you know if you sold to any online nurseries and which ones? If not, I understand, just wondering.

If your looking for Japanese maples you can buy saplings at leftcoast bonsai there currently sold out last I checked

I’m in the US and is also looking for a Beni chidori. Let me know if you can help. Thank you

Are their grafted trees marked as such? They have a great selection, just can't tell what's grafted.
Yeah they are all grafted unless otherwise noted in description. I have 4 mrmaple trees and are accurate named varieties shipped pest free and packed the best I've ever seen. I can confidently recommend them.

i have quite a few, they are decent quality trees. Defiantly a good place to get hard to find cultivars. Occasionally they will have what they call “bonsai babies”. They are their seed grown JM. I have also seen them list seed grown mikawa once and they were part of their Tuesday 10@10 releases. They sold out on 3 minutes.

There is not a single known example of this cultivar in the US. If someone has one, they are keeping it a secret. Certainly there is nothing available for sale that any here has heard of. I have been in contact with many of the biggest JM and bonsai nurseries, and no one has it, and no one knows of anyone who does.

@William N. Valavanis has one (see link and attached image from my visit to his garden a few years back), and there are at least 3 other advanced specimens (but not as advanced as Mr. Valavanis'). I've also sent hundreds of 3-5 yr old cutting-grown beni chidori. I started a crop of 500 in May 2023 entirely for US demand.

Well... maybe it died(?) I just talked to @William N. Valavanis and he said he didn't have any... and didn't know of anyone in the US who did.

So it is a great mystery...

You seem to be the closest vendor who has it - because wherever they are going in the US it is like they are dropping into a black hole.

Some went to professionals (and clubs), and I'm not going to name them because they don't need to be flooded with emails like I am constantly about deshojo, seigen, and beni chidori. They have a wider reach than I do, so if/when they sell publicly I'm sure you'll hear about. Maybe they are selling to their tighter circles, I don't know, I don't ask, not my business.

Other batches went to nurseries who I know intend to propagate -- you know how that game goes: expect a 3-5 year delay for minimal volumes, and if they scale exponentially in 8-10 years there should be large crops available annually.

Many went to private individuals, some of them have posted on social media
