For better or worse I picked up a couple Cotoneaster dammeri (Bearberry). I've decided that these will be my "experimental" bonsai. Everything I've read about them makes them seem like ideal candidates for me. They are said to grow like weeds so I will be able to play with them a bit more, come spring. I picked up some Diatomaceous earth on the way home, I guess I'll need to get an array of sorting sifters to get the right size grain for different applications. I still need to find a small pot, 3" - 4" was recommended by a couple articles, and some tools.
When I got them home I cut the pot down to the soil level and on one tree trimmed 2 branches (with my old mustache trimmers) that were touching the ground and starting to grow roots. Makes wonder if this species wouldn't be a good candidate for a raft style bonsai. Anyway, here are the pictures.

I am going to the monthly meeting of the Orange County Bonsai Society this weekend, They have an hour of education before the meeting, so I am going to bring these trees and see what they say. I hope they don't slap me ;-)
