I have grown this Adansonia Digitata from seed and it is in its second year. You can see the lower woody section (last year's growth) and the green softwood (this year's growth). It is currently 35cm tall and has been in leaf this season for 3 months. I am aiming for it eventually to be around 50 - 60cm tall. It has not started branching yet - all leaves are still on the trunk. I want to encourage branching, which removing the very top will hopefully achieve, but I don't know when is the best time to do this. Here are what I believe my options are:

1. Remove the top now and hopefully some of the dormant buds will branch in the remainder time left of this season, but this may create a problem creating a new leader and maintaining its natural straight trunk shape.

or

2. Let it grow for another year and hopefully it will naturally branch, but the branches may be further up the trunk then I would like, but the main trunk will be more natural.

What would you do?

I have a few just like it. Around 2 years or so from seed. Haven’t done any pruning to mine, just letting them grow. Although I did wire movement/twists into them.

sorry Daniel that looks like kigelia africana.
baobabs don't have serrated leaves.
grow that tree out in a much bigger pot...

Thanks for this info. I will keep an eye on it and see if more mature leaves have a different shape. I have seen a couple of young baobabs with serrated leaves on the internet ( ) but you may be right. I will repot next season.
