Hi Guys,
I'm just getting started on my tiny tree adventure. I recently acquired two Tridents and an Eastern Red Cedar and am looking to expand my small collection. I have done some reading on Bald Cypress and Dawn Redwoods and would like to acquire some workable trees. I got my Trident seedlings from Matt Ouwinga at Kaedebonsai and he also has Cypress and Redwood seedlings that I am considering but I wanted to check with the community and see if anyone knew of anywhere I could find some more established trees? I don't mind having some sticks in a pot but it doesn't give me much to do or look at lol.

Cheers,
-J

If your plans include traveling through or near Columbia, South Carolina, I can help you with Bald and Pond Cypress. I have many to choose from and prices that start about $150. All collected material and perhaps some of the best stock available. I do not ship! You will have to visit in person.

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply. My work has me tied down to a 100 mile radius due to COVID but I will keep this in mind for when I finally leave my bubble.

Being in NOVA, you are fairly close to Meehan's Miniatures right across the state line in Maryland. They have hundreds of starters, a lot of pre-bonsais, and some finished trees to buy. Their starters and pre-bonsai are priced pretty well; not positive about the finished trees though. If you see any bonsai starters at local nurseries, chances are good they came from Meehan's.

That being said, from what I've heard and seen online, @johng's trees are pretty top notch!

Thanks for the recommendation. I am definitely going to have to make a pilgrimage to see @johng when all this nonsense is over.

If you're in NOVA, you should be able to find a spot to collect bald cypress from the wild. The native range extends into southern Delaware.

I had given that some thought as well for the spring. I'll have to keep my eye out for them.

True, but being in Richmond, I've never seen any native bald Cypress here or to the north (but it doesn't mean there isn't any). They really start south of me in the tidewater area, starting in Charles City and south along the James River. Williamsburg is full of native Bald Cypress.

Ya, I haven't really noticed any near me, but then again everything up this way is hyper developed.

But if you're looking for a nice collected specimen, it's best to get one from someone who knows what to look for and what they're doing; there's probably not many better than JohnG on the east coast.
