I recently acquired an azalea kinsai in a sale in the Netherlands. It has lost quite a lot off leaves now the wheather is turning towards winter. My question: are kinsai a deciduous variety or not? Does anyone have some winter images of kinsai to compare mine to? Thanks!

Evergreen. My azalea loose a lot of last years leaves in winter, As long as the growing tips and buds look good.

No, it is an evergreen azalea or Japanse azalea. Kinsai probably is not a hybrid but a cultivar of pure species Rhododendron indicum.

Most evergreen azaleas lose leaves in preparation of winter. Some lose all leaves, except the small leaves around the tips/flower buds.
Many satsuki lose a lot of leaves, the large leaves that are grown in spring just after flowering. So the first leaves on the new shoots, which are largest. These drop in autumn.
Some evergreen azaleas have been bred and selected to retain almost all leaves throughout winter. Many small-flowering European kurume are like that.
Older leaves eventually fall off. Leaves on azaleas generally have a lifetime of about a year.

That said, we can't tell you if your Kinsai is dropping leaves normally because of autumn. Or if it is dropping leaves for other reasons (ie dying).
Likely it is the former and many people get nervous when their azalea bonsai starts to drop leaves in autumn.

All the Kinsai bonsai in the autumn exhibition videos from Japan are now showing signs of dormancy. Probably because of a heated greenhouse to keep it lush green during the show.

They will look like this during winter:

Note, they look red rather than green, like described here:

Kinsai is supposed to be evergreen but mine all lost leaves in winter just gone. Not sure if that's related to cold temps, being pot bound or some other factors.
They have since budded well now that the weather is warmer so do not despair.

Gorgeous, and a very unconventional choice in color for the Bunzan pot, it really elevates the seasonal intrigue of the material.

Thanks all for the responses and pictures/vids. I'll try to give an update in spring :)

Heb je die in een winkel kunnen vinden? Ben er ook al even naar op zoek (stekjes, plantjes,..) maar zonder succes helaas. Hoop ze ook ooit eens te kunnen groeien!

Wow the cold must really affect them. Mine stay perfectly green all year. My climate is similar to that of San Fran.

Thanks @Underdog! Mine looks similar tot your last picture. I'm guessing/hoping it'll be fine. Spring will tell.

Actually i am mostly interested in kinsai necause of its atypical flowers but azalea in general is my interest for bonsai.

I don't have Kinsai or grow azaleas with atypical flowers, but what I do grow, you can follow here:

I might compile a 'for sale' list when spring comes.

That´s a really impressive collection you have there. And even more impressive is your devotion to the breeding and selecting of supperior plants to your liking. Do you have them flower naturally or you have them forced flower using lamps so they flower and thus can be all pollinated at the same time? Really interested at how you handle the whole breeding aspect. And ofcourse I´d love to follow up on your sale!

I usually just let them flower naturally. However, to breed satsuki with European evergreen kurume-type azaleas, I had a much easier time bringing a satsuki indoors and making it flower about a month earlier.
Since I have a setup for growing seedlings indoors anyway.
Actually, right now I have a few 1 year old seedlings that did develop flower buds indoors to force them to flower asap.
These are all satsuki x kurume that I suspect need an additional cross to really mix up the genes. So rather than apply a selection on these seedlings in a few years, I just make a new cross right away.
Just to speed up the process as I suspect the first generation will have too many dominant kurume traits.

For more questions, please ask in my thread. This thread was kinda about 12345_yes's Kinsai.

Ik zal een paar stekjes maken id lente :)

Zijn de blaadjes al teruggekeerd op je kinsai? Hoe doet de plant het nog?
Groeten 😀
