I had the good fortune this weekend to spend some time with each of the guest Artists at the PBA show in DC. I took a BYOT workshop with Arthur Joura Saturday, and with Rodney Clemons on Sunday.
Arthur Joura is curator of the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville. I have read a bit of his philosophy online and find him to be someone with a different viewpoint from most bonsai professionals that I have had the pleasure of speaking with. He sees bonsai from a quite naturalistic frame of reference, and chooses to style bonsai as you would see a tree in nature, and less of a "cookie cutter" tree with the requisite triangular canopy, bleached white deadwood, etc. I happen to share many of his opinions as it pertains to design, I just didnt think it was allowed, or shared by anyone so went along thinking it was how things were supposed to be in bonsai.
Rodney Clemons is a southern boy from the panhandle of Florida who has relocated to Georgia, and has many similar opinions of bonsai design, and seems to also be a non-conformist.
Both very likeable gentlemen who know their way around bonsai. I would recommend, if given the chance, you should consider taking a workshop from either of them.
