has anyone tried a port wine magnolia (Michelia figo) as a bonsai, i have one that im making into a bonsai, i bought the tree at a nursery. it has great roots, nice and thick spreading from the trunk out. it has a few buds, ready to flower, i did chop it down to the correct height so of course most the buds are gone. any suggestions on what shapes for bonsai looks good with this tree? and any advice would be great

I don't remember seeing anyone talking about them here, but I'm pretty sure there was a thread about M. figo on IBC within the last year or so. You might want to check there.

If you want recommendations for styling, you should post a photo so people have an idea what you're working with. If you're interested in more general styling advice for magnolias, search google images for "magnolia bonsai" and you'll find some interesting examples.
