Any reason to keep citronella-smoke away from my trees? Unsure how far to place tiki-torches!

I've got several tiki-torches (~5' tall, bamboo-stakes/baskets) that hold oil/fuel containers (the wicks are pretty crummy, may need to replace them to set this up!), there's a spot I'd like to put them that would have them nearby one of my benches and, given that the height of the wicks will be close to the height of the canopies on that bench, I'm kind of concerned about smoke/soot (or even the citronella itself, unsure by what mechanism it repels mosquitos) being harmful - what's the closest you'd place a standard tiki-torch relative to a tree? Thanks!!

(also, if citronella in and of itself is bad for some reason, would love to know! I don't have any oil yet, I actually found 5 new tiki-torches and then scored 4 of the reservoirs/wicks from a friend, so while I'd prefer citronella (FL=mosquitos!), I'd avoid it if there were any concerns I'm missing!)

Worried about the smoke.....how about just buy the tree? I have these on my porch them seem to work well. You can get them most anywhere.

Because the main benefit to me is the fire, not the mosquito-repellent properties!! I love fire accents like that, in fact I've just setup a 500W flood-lamp for my nursery so at nighttime it's very illuminated (when I'm out there, not all night of course!) and the tiki-torches are just awesome accents, I'd have one at the edge of every table if it wouldn't cover the trees in soot!!

All good until your neighbors think you are doing some type of satanic tree worshiping in your back yard!:):):)

ROFL! I can only imagine what my neighbors think of me, I have a 'shared backyard' as I live on a corner-lot, a whole triplex backs-up to my backyard so there's technically 3 backyards behind mine, although nobody in any of those places goes out back, so I've just kind of been expanding and expanding 'my' area lol, am not a good 5' past my property line w/o issues (yet), think I've got it permanent now though so hopefully I never get a complaint!

Where in arizona are you? I've visited Tucson and loved it, would take that dry heat over the humidity here any day!!

I am in Phoenix area. Dry heat is all good as well until you are going on your 4th week of 110 plus
