Any ideas please... Japanese maple

Oh yea? So I dug this up from a garden at work where it sprouted from a seed. I "potted" it up this spring, the roots looked great and it leafed out nicely. I forgot it out in a storm that ended up a tornado ripped some trees down and a limb fell on it (the scars). So you would leave it alone? No pruning or anything just let it grow, for how long? And I don't want it to be this tall but I don't know really how/when to do a chop, and really don't want to kill it.
If anyone can tell me how they might go about developing this from just potted

Let it grow until you get the trunk thickness you want

What would need to do if I were happy with the thickness now but just wanted to make the tree a lot shorter. Like like that first tiny little Branch going off the back with 2 sets of leaves being the height of the Apex. Same thing? Or do I have to chop it an inch or two above and just hope 4 more branches to grow lower, if it even survive...

Dude, you said you recently collected it. It’s shocked. Then you said it went through a storm which did some minor damage. More shock.

And now you want to add more stress to it by chopping it?

Leave it alone!

Get another tree so you won’t fiddle with this one so much!

Sincerely.
It needs a rest. Two, three years.
If it's healthy by then, chop it down.

Do you know how trees grow?
Do you know how trees respond to pruning?
If not, time to do some research. Having an understanding of these basic principles are critical in this hobby.

Here are some articles to get you headed in the right direction. These will not necessarily tell you what to do with your tree, but how to proceed, and how the tree will respond.

Great! This is exactly what I need I am not the greatest when it comes to searching for things on the internet so if you, or anybody else for that matter, can recommend either links or literature that I should use as reference would be greatly appreciated

Great. It’s polite to say thank you. These articles will give you plenty to get started. Go read them, understand the information, then come back and share your plan for this tree.

Plan for now is just going to be to let it grow/gain vigor, if next spring it looks like it has survived I'll see what I have to work with and go from there...
