Hello,

New to Bonsai nut forum, looks like great resource to further knowledge.
About myself.
Reside in Japan, watching auction this week & saw a antique Chinese pot rising up to the stratosphere & end at 5.4 million yen 48 hours ago.
My Attention firmly focused.
I collect Japanese antiques & recall Seeing almost identical pot .IMG_20220308_075611.jpg.......somewhere...?
Not in my small balcony collection, but I know it's out there & I could not fit in my backpack , so left it so must try to recall Where that was?.
I generally pick up 1/2 dozen antique dozen pots per week If I can.
Interested in posting pot signatures IF forum members interested in any of the pots ?, like to see these pot orphans get new homes .

Hi Thanks for the interest. I am collecting daily. 4 pots today. Only one with chop . It's a work in progress collecting in winter on a motorcycle. Ya have to do the Best with what ya got. Try to take some nice pics am & post. Still can't recall where exactly I saw that Very very old bonsai pot ?, but recall it was of the same type as the 5.4 million yen sold on auction no signature.

Most people who buy high-end pots know exactly what they are buying, and those collections rarely end up in a yard sale.

And on the other side of the equation, the wise antique hunter Rick Harrison says “Just cos it’s old don’t mean it’s valuable”.

Good luck on the hunt. If you aren’t aware, this is a great identification resource:

Hey Brian,
Thanks for your input & thoughtful advice re my adventures into Bonsai Pots.
It's a learning curve to be sure, & I am Enjoying it immensely.
Just posting my finds with & without signatures to See what the knowledgeable collectors think.
Looking at pictures on the Web to try & find pots of $100 value upwards.
I am fortunate in being able to get the pots at the right price & willing to listen if there are any expressions of interest for the pots to change hands , single pots or by the dozen. I will pack them professionally & post as per buyers directions.

Hi, the Chinese chops are mostly difficult for my level of translation, some of the less complicated older Japanese scripts I can mostly translate. I will have more pots to post this weekend if your watching. If I can translate I will, if I can't certainly appreciate any input from members that can. Pot I posted this morning, my photography very poor my apologies as the pots color is much better than the pictures, I will repost those in better lighting.

Happy hunting. I keep the good stuff on the top shelf, but you never know what you’re going to find.

It would be wise to educate yourself on the pot chop database from post #6. Do some homework so nobody is deceived, you included.
Our members tend to be skeptical when a new guy shows up peddling wares that he himself cannot identify. Do it right, and you’ll do well.

I enjoy antique bonsai pots.

Have fun, looking forward to more pictures

FWIW, the pots you've posted are not antiques. They're pretty typical for the most part. Doesn't mean they're not good or not worth anything. Most look like good solid useable pots (with a couple of exceptions--the green one and the jar-like containers) Just means you might want to think about relabeling what you're selling.

This one is Houtoku, low-end Japanese production.

From the clay, form and details on these (drainage holes and feet, for instance),these both look like mass production pots from Japan circa 1980's 2000 or even later--which makes them good for use. They're pretty common in bonsai. I've got a dozen similar.

Bonsai pottery is a very interesting topic. Being in Japan can definitely help you understand this subject better and perhaps also sell some for a decent profit. However, when it comes to high-end pots, like any product, trust is a huge factor. I would recommend educating yourself on this topic before buying and selling (my 2 cents). There are many factors that determine the value of a pot-
Historical significance, Author, Rarity, Usability, Condition, Visual appeal, Time investment, Skill level, Clay body etc. And then you have trends which you need to be on top. And the sad news is that there is not much literature on this topic.

But to start off you should get the Bijutsu Bonki book. This is by far the best book out there for high-end pots and information on them. Here is a link to more information on them- https://japanesebonsaipots.net/2012/06/28/bijutsu-bonki/
