I found this beat up concave cutter in eBay and (not surprisingly) no one else placed a bid on it so I won and got it for $9.99. It arrived today and I noticed a different heft...definitely an older tool, I like it.

Would you have considered buying it? Or am I crazy? :D

can't beat the price- maybe sharpen it up and use it on roots.

Went to work and re-profiled the cutting edge and after an hour or so...and it is much better now (see pics). Not yet perfect (by choice) since I do not want to grind it too much yet. I decided to get some use on the relatively nice edge now and fix the rest as I go on.

Did several test cuts and it cuts almost like new. Oh... I forgot to mention, it is an old MASAKUNI!

I think this is now going to be my favorite daily use concave cutter. :)

Why not? They work well on big roots I just use one for roots and nothing else.

I have a cheap (but good quality) Chinese stainless cutter for that job. This new purchase may be cheaper but more valuable so I plan on taking more care of it.

Looks like it sharpened up nicely. Seems like a real fine buy too.

I dont think it is an old model...I think one of mine is the same.
Does any one know how to fix a knob cutter that came out of alignment?

I mean the cutting edges dont meet...and it is no possible to align by grinding one of them.
One is lower than the other.

If I am understanding you correctly...then they are supposed to be like that. It may be a quick fix (or not). Again, please post a pic.

FYI, on this one, I have to go through great lengths so the cutter edges do not meet.

They need to meet at a straight line ..at the same point When you look at the cutting edges, they should meet and touch.
I shall post picture tomorrow.

Mine are like this:

I always thought they are supposed to me like this. (shame on me)

That is how my concave cutter is...and that is how I bought it. (left picture> like tweezers).
But the knob cutter is different manufacturer and the edges are overlapping. ( right picture)
So is that OK then? (it seems to me;))

The right pic is the correct one. :) Now, your concave cutter is the one that needs help. LOL

But my concave cutter cuts very well and that is how I bought it...
I suspect (not sure) my knob cutter is not OK...but I trew it away the moment that I saw that they dont meet...so now I need to try and see how it cuts...well or not...Never used it since I saw the blades.
Silly woman! Maybe it is supposed to be like that? I shall try it tomorrow.

BTW, the blade should not align just by a hair...literally. If the overlap is more then something is also wrong and need to be corrected. As I said, sometimes it is easy or could be hard.

Some Chinese made are "cheating" by adding a bevel at the outer side of the inner blade...this style is NOT ideal (though workable) as it causes a kick-back as you cut. Instead of it digging in like the outer blade would.

Turns out it was a good buy for you. However, this would have been a terrible buy for most. I know for a fact I would have been working for a long time to try and correct those mangled edges. I have very little experience at sharpening concave cutters to begin with, and this wasn't a case of sharpening! This was an overhaul. Good buy, but its really only a good buy for you(looks like you have some skill at working with blades/cutting edges?), but this would have been a garbage purchase for me. Either way, testament to how long good tools will last, and be revamped.
