American locust

I found an American locust tree growing in my yard , I couldn’t find much on them being bonsai. So here I am it’s about 10” tall and wanted to know if they make good bonsai, it also has a few small thorns on it. Thanks

I couldn’t find much on them being bonsai.

Reason being that they are not sought out for bonsai. Black locust is good for firewood and fence posts. And the flowers make good fritters.

Wouldn’t hurt to give one a shot. The bark and leaves, though compound, would work well for bonsai, but I hear they don’t generally respond well to captivity. I have a cord or two of firewood that will keep me warm this winter.

In nature, if you want to kill a Black Locust, mess with its roots.
