I recently purchased some hard triple line akadama. Unfortunately I didn't notice I had ordered 1/2-3/4 inch particle size. Too large for what I'm working on.

If I physically crush the larger pieces to break them down will the akadama still be usable or will I have compromised it's structural integrity?

If it is a loss, what are some things to use these large 1/2 inch particles for?

Responses greatly appreciated as I need to get my soil mix started ASAP.

I like that size for larger trees, especially pines and junipers. It is also good as a drainage layer.
Crushing it won’t hurt the “structural integrity”, since akadama breaks down anyway. Just eliminate the dust if you go that route.

Coarse roots ~= coarse growth ~= coarse soil

notice that these are not equivalencies, but there is a relationship here. my teacher will step down grain size when slowing trees down for refinement.
