Dunno why I should expect THIS year to be different.
Maybe because I located the stupid tree where it would be sheltered from the drying N. WIND!
Soooo...... a SOUTH wind comes up on a couple hot days and fries it to a crisp.

I gotta be done with mapes. This one is my last and ALL have had the same issue.
Palmatum doesn't thrive in cactus country.

So today I lifted it out of the shallow pot and dropped it as-is into a deeper, bigger, COARSER soil pot to hope it makes it through the winter and ready by spring to put in a WAY deeper pot than it was in.

Only thing I can think of short of a wood shredder.

Well, booh hoo, may be you nice weather guys could have some downfalls from time to time :p

BTW: in freezing your butts Illinois maples are just thrilling, may be you should send it to me ;)

My maples are doing OK, but I'm just marking time before they start to crisp. This weather is one of the reasons why I like liquidambar so much. The leaves don't reduce as well as a lot of maples, but at least we can get nice fall color with them even with our California heat. Maples, not so much unless we have a cool late summer and fall, which is almost never. It could be worse, though. At least they aren't as bad as the sycamores (not that any of us are growing those for bonsai).

Man dude. You sure have your problems.
They planted in the kakadama you posted earlier?

I have a few crispy leaves from the heat last week, but not terrible, however I am not in as much heat as you and I probably have more humidity.
