Just repotted my Mugo pine here in scotland. Me and my teacher done this. The soil was basically mud, its health in this soil is definitely suffering!

Been told to keep it in the shade for 6 weeks. Is that ok? I thought pines would be ok in sun after a repot because of less water loss compared to deciduous trees.

I don't know.
I repot them in summer.
Then put them in full sun.

I also do my Mugo work in summer...
This Mugo looks like yamadori though...,yes?

If it was me, I'd give morning sun, afternoon shade until the needles are opening on the candles.

Nice tree!

Now i’m start to think i should have done this in the summer.

Here is a better picture. I got it last year.

I "see" why this spring repotting may "work" but also why it is more dangerous than summer repotting.

That tree decided back in August or so it had enough roots to support those buds.

Now it doesn't.

Sure you could "balance" it.....

But you would have to know EXACTLY which branches the tree will abandon.... And cut them. We cant know this.

In summer. It is pausing. Repotting BEFORE it's decision in August is Safer.
Because it has a couple months still to store energy, calculate it, and decide how many buds to push in August...ish...

So in its confusion. . part shade sounds safe.

My teacher is peter foele. I just followed his decision.

The tree is weak because of the soil being mud. It had bad root rot also!

No roots where prooned just alot of the outer root ball was removed so some roots may have been lost.

That mugo has the most beautiful foliage I have seen! How did it get so small?
