My fiancee' bought this tree as a nursery rescue for about 6 bucks. This thing looked like some alien spider with long, spindly branches emanating from the center trunks of the tree. Wish she had a before pic of it, but suffice it to say, this this was ugly when 1st bought.

I think she has really managed to pull off one of the more difficult styles in bonsai with this one and I am really proud of her for doing that! SO I decided to post it here. It should be noted, she has been slowly cutting this thing back for months to induce back budding. I really like the foliage on this variety myself and it certainly loves to back bud. Thanks for taking a look!

Very nice work. In order for this tree to survive, you will need to let it completely grow out into a bush to get stronger. Any further work done on this tree should performed after 1 -2 more years. Also, unfortunately, the wind swept style might be on borrowed time. Windswept relies on sporadic and visible branches and the foliage. You might not be able to keep cutting the tree back to keep the style without the tree dying. All that said, it is a really well executed design.

Thanks for the response, Rob. I really love your opinions. The cut back happened slowly over the past growing season and it seems to have bounced back pretty well. The wiring was done to bring the branches down to where they are now as the original incarnation of the plant had a zillion of these spider leg looking branches emanating from the main trunk, so they were already moving in the general direction that she has placed them. I have mentioned to her that you are right--give this tree some time to regain strength and then go from there.

Thanks a lot, again!
