Yes I saw this difference, but it looked like branchlets to my untrained BC eye. Just checked mine, there's none of this kind of leaves. I will inspect it later in season guessing those that will be dropped, will not lignify. But my metasequoia is a worse case as I mentioned, it drops much more when dormant. Will wait for a right season to document it, thank you very much indeed.

@petegreg , is this the growth you are talking about?

This type of growth is mostly leaf or is a form of leaf, it will fall off with the rest of the leaves in the fall. I have a couple of times had a large one coming off the trunk make it till the next year.
That is frond growth. This appears every now and then. If you don't know what you're looking at the multi-leafed leaf looks like a branch. When it sheds the fall, some may think they've lost a branch...

Looking forward to purchasing a fat based bald cypress pre bonsai to work with this winter. Or maybe I can find one for sale now. Would like to do some carving and all that good stuff. I missed out on a nice tree with a great base last year. Base was done and it had a couple of wireings. Would have been perfect. Didn't know if they would grow well for me but seems they like my weather. Having fun with this one but really want to find one with a nice trunk. I may have the patience to grow one out but I doubt it.

Wire all cut off.

Little wire on the top.

Wired with exaggerated movement. Later after wire is off and it grows out a bit should be a little less movement in the branches.

Its hard to see in a picture but the base seems to be swelling some. Letting it grow out the rest of the year. May or may not cut the top part off. I'm planning it both ways for now. Will cut those roots above the soil line this winter as long as its ok to do that.

This is what I've done with the tree in just over 5 month. Working well for what I'm looking for. Didn't get all the branches I wanted but not bad for the first year. I've let it grow out and this winter will cut it back for branch taper and wire it. Late spring put it back in the tub of water. Very fun tree to work with.

Love seeing the tree sprout new growth. Looks like I may be getting some new branches where I wanted. For some reason I really like this little tree. Fun to watch grow. Grows fast. Flexible to shape. Good in my climate and I like the size of it. Fun project for me. I may end up chopping the top and top left branch off but want to see it grown out before doing anything. My designs always seem to change as I go.
