Got a couple of Elms (I believe :) )
Plan is to style those 2 in a smaller pot for a cute shorty look.
Maybe try to grow on a rock for the one with aerial roots?
Appreciate any suggestions on how to work with these and what style to go for.

Thanks

You know these shouldn't be kept in your car!:p

Sorry...all I got is Jokes for you!

Except....

It's hard to make a ror out of something with stiff roots already.

Nice Elms tho!

Maroun,

[1] Take root cuttings for tests.

[2] Take a root cutting and place it over a rock, bury and grow for a year - observe - come back and discuss

[3] Take images front on, easier to see than those above shots. Use a plain bcakground.

Nice elms I suggest ground growing for trunks - say 5 to 8 cms wide.

Always test new ideas / experiments on rooted cuttings not the mother plant. What you learn will allow
you to safely work with the mothers.
Good Day

Here is a man-made rock [fired earthenware clay with a porous glaze ] with a Serissa s. cutting.
Next stage - rock is hollow - lift out the serissa and in repotting pass other roots down the rock side, into the cavities shaped on the sides.
Stay tuned - old image by the way.

Nice creative composition. That man-made fired clay rock is fabulous.

Thanks for your input Anthony,

For root cuttings do you mean roots from the aerial ones or underground roots?

As for the pictures sorry those were shot in the car while I was driving back. Couldn't wait :)

Here's better ones

Still tiny but wondering if I can pull a semi cascade shape with Aerial roots ? Any better choice of style ?

This one has a bit thicker trunk, might be good for a formal trunk and broom? Any other choice for it. Trunk is around 1-2 cm si growing it till 5-8 will take few years I guess.

Thanks

Maroun,

you should be able to use both above and below ground roots.

Try at 5 cm lengths.
Just remember which side was up.
Stick into a well draining soil mix, place in bright light and in about 3 to 6 weeks you should see green.

Try this for trunk size.

On our side we can get 55 US gallon black plastic barrels [ these contain nothing toxic ] cut to 1/2 or 1/3 size.
Drainage holes and a good freely draining soil mix. Plant mother plants.
Place or do outdoors when night temperature is above 22 deg,C
Water, fertilise as is normal.

Just let the branches grow.

See if you get some size as the trunk goes.
Best of growing.

Thanks,
Will try to have a growing pot, doubt I can fit 55 G pots but will try for a few smaller ones and have one bonsai in each which would still be better than what they are in now. Will see how they grow till next year and take it from there.
Thanks.

You might try large basins....large washing plastic pans. They are not mega gallon size but are usually about 24 inches diameter and about 8 inches deep. They work well with drainage holes in the bottom. Very sturdy. Easy to move around. I'm not sure what's available around you...however, I'm sure you'll be creative and find a solution.

Actually got these and few more that I got some roses in so might use to grow some of the bonsaïs I got. Larger ones are 13 inch wide and 11 inch high. Got some bigger ones as well.

But looking at those two elms and most of my other olive bonsais I'm not sure I should use very big pots even for growing? Should I start with a smaller pot and move to larger gradually ? Those elms are less 1/2-3/4 inch thick and trunk is only 3-4 inch high.

Was even considering moving to a bonsai pot and shape directly and keep very small. Any input is appreciated .

There's some nice small elms in this current posting...
do you have at least one forrest?

Any input is appreciated .

You see that rim at the bottom of the big pot on the right...about 2 inches up...

I'd cut em off there and use them like that.

Someone recently posted a Graham Potter Video where he talks about how those deep pots are just no good.

I wouldn't use em as they are for anything. But the bottom part could prove an excellent training container.

forrest is indeed a nice ide for those small ones.
They're selling them at 10 bucks in a nursery so can get me 3-4 of those and put in a same pot :)

Not sure I'm getting this right. as per Tieball suggestions above I need to put in a large and deep pot

and thought this would work to grow the bonsais I have???
I have a few bonsai pots I can use as well if its best to place in a shallow pot but now I'm not clear if I should grow in a deep or shallow pot before moving to a propper bonsai pot for styling?

I'm not clear

Sorry!

24x8 is still quite rectangular.
3/1. That's a pretty good ratio...
Even those pots the elms are in now are about 3/1.

But those round ones as they are...
Maybe 1/1...or 1/1.5 even?

3/1 is about as deep as I would go, even a tree that prefers more foot room would be happy there.

If you want to thicken trunks any large bucket with drainage will work. Or the ground if feasible. Plant them and let them grow to desired thickness.
Root cuttings are for propogation. Did you evendors ask about making more?
Also, the one with the aerial roots looks to have started out as a root cutting. That is why it has those roots exposed. All of that ones trunk was underground before. It looks to have been lifted to start a new tree. The extra roots should been removed then.
A root cutting is a root that was underground being just a root. When certain trees are repotted (like elms) you can use roots that have been cut off to make another tree. You replant the piece of root with a cut end and some wood exposed to the air and sun. It will sprout leaves and branches to become another tree. It doesn't matter which end you use.

You can use your plastic pots this way...

But I'm not sure this is a right season of year to repot and root work CHEs. Maybe I don't know enough about chinese elms but I repot them in the spring.

Spring is the time. The only time if you mess with roots. To grow them out you can slip pot anytime.
