Two of my first two trees were small blue rub junipers. I enjoyed how flexible the branches are and wired them like crazy. Four years later, they look like they’re on their way out.IMG_2376.jpegIMG_2382.jpeg
Not sure what the sickness is, but they’ve been regularly fertilized. I don’t see any mites or bugs. 🤷‍♀️

Anyways, I was at My favorite nursery clearance section, and picked up two almost identical replacements-

wow, really nice! and look at all those berries :) I like it, good structure and nice shaping/styling you have done here

We have tons of 3 gallon BRJs at work, but I have yet to pull the trigger on one. They look full-bodied and healthy. I've heard they do not naturally (or easily?) lend themselves to informal uprights but to semi-cascades and cascades. I have one little one (less than a gallon) that I'm going to make as a hanging cliff but those 3 gallons at work are mighty tempting. Yours seem to have good bones for informal uprights (or is it just that past a certain height they are harder to train as informal/upright?)

Thanks!
Being the ground huggers that they are, sometimes it’s hard to picture styling them in a more upright way. I will admit I would still be maybe a little overwhelmed at first to take on a big one like a 3 gallon or bigger.

That said they’re so flexible and floppy that manipulation is quite easy. it does take some repeated wiring to hold them upright. They are a lot softer to work with then a procumbens juniper though! 🤣
