Just me working with Japanese White Pine from seed to Come What May

Hey , is this it? https://rwpconservancy.org/japanese-garden/ Could be a JWP in the top left of that pic. I don't know how many other Japanese gardens there are in Rhode Island, but probably not enough room in that state for too many of them...

    60 y/o Jade

Nice jade! Those shriveled leaves can be a sign of rot. I know you said you water pretty infrequently, but if it's too rootbound then maybe it's trapping some water deep inside or maybe just lack of airflow/ oxygen in there. You can just remove the affected leaves with no worries. When you...

Wiring Question - Did I doom these branches?

Does anyone know what happened to the wiring video lesson that was on Instructables.com? I went looking for it recently and couldn't find it. It was a good resource to teach the basics of wiring.

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

I hadn't used them before but I've heard good reviews. Plus I drive by it all the time going from Utah to Idaho where my wife is from, so I didn't have to pay shipping. 😉

    Rescued Barberry shrub

I found this this giant barberry discarded in a dumpster last spring from the city's yearly cleanup thing. It still had most of its foliage when I found it, but not too many roots. A lot of the original leaves did dry up and fall off. But it has regrown a bunch and continues to build strength...

    New to Bonsai from NJ

I think that bug picture is a ladybug pupa about to become an adult. Soon it will be feasting on any aphids that are hanging out on your rose bush.

    Can somebody ID this stump

My first thought was willow, but willow leaves grow alternately on their stems. Olea Europe leaves grow opposite to each other on the stems, like yours are. Willow stems usually have a green, yellow, or tan/ brown color on their stems. Olive have that white or silvery color on younger stems...

Take a "Ridiculous" Self-Portrait; Win a pot! (or pots, donors depending)

Most of you on this thread are too new to the forum to know about the pink thong incident from @Smoke, back in the day... That would've won the contest instantly.

    Massive sango kaku!

That's good that you got it anchored well with those straps. With that big canopy, the winds can really wiggle the tree around and destroy newly forming roots.

Can I and Should I Defoliate my Tree?

I would not defoliate it at this point. Your tree is very young and defoliation is a technique used on more mature/ refined trees for reducing leaf size. This guy needs all its leaves for energy to grow bigger. I think the "rust" you are noticing is just hard water or fertilizer stains on the...

    Ugly JBP project

I hope it stays alive and you can make something cool out of it. Sam Doecke "Aussie Bonsai Bloke" on YouTube threw an olive into a concrete mixer with a bunch of bricks, how's that for an extreme technique? I probably wouldn't recommend that for anything other than an olive though.

    Massive sango kaku!

That was so generous of him! I wish you the best of luck! You might as well try to make cuttings from the pieces you trim off when you are reducing the crown. You could also try to airlayer some branches too.

    Rockspirea. Bonsai Material?

Well it definitely has a good chunky trunk with some taper and movement. If you could chase the foliage back toward the trunk, eliminate those really thick branches, and build some ramification, you could have a sumo style tree going on.
