I think there is the so called "Smoke Screen" technique: http://www.bonsainut.com/threads/growing-some-tridents-from-seed.12974/#post-195774 https://bonsaial.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/whats-under-the-screen/ https://bonsaial.wordpress.com/2013/07/14/trident-seedling-update-2/ Smoke has talked...

    (( Kiyohime Advice ))

I don't think it is kiyohime either. I believe kiyohime is more basally dominant and would have longer internodes if left to its own devices. Looks like shishigashira or a big kotohime, but I could be wrong on all accounts. Nice movement in there, I would airlayer if you have the time.

    Ulmus Parvifolia Yatsubusa

I'm not a horticulturalist or a plant geneticist, but I have a background in genetics. The ability to propagate a cultivar through seed would have to do with the nature of the, presumably, genetic lesion(mutation) and has nothing to do fundamentally with how it arose or is propagated. The same...

    Tricks?

After two years I got curious and repotted some of my through-tile maples. Here is a ~3 year trident grown in turface and sited pine bark. It was grown on a 4"X4" tile through a ~1/4" hole and fertilized heavily with miracle grow. Top growth and root growth was strong and both were left to...

Is there a book or web site for mature tree photos ?

I remember a website that was dedicated to cataloging locations and pictures of large trees worldwide, but I couldn't find it. In my search I found these: http://www.americanforests.org/bigtrees/bigtrees-search/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_trees Both seem informative, though often...

    Some facts about bonsai soil

Though modern growing methods and substrates may overwhelm their influence, doesn't soil provide a more complete medium for beneficial symbionts and microbes? Does anyone know of the extent of the effect symbionts have in different substrates, or how completely people understand the influence...

Cation exchange capacity and water retention rates list

Kennedy, I found this in a post you made about turface in April. I think this is probably what you mean: http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?10444-Dry-Turface-water-resistant/page6 I ran across this chart in Journal of American Bonsai Society Vol 43 #4 2009 page 6. The talk...

    Tricks?

I dont have many long term results (I only started this technique last year), but I have begun to experiment with growing on and through tile with Japanese Maple, Trident Maple, Crepe Myrtle, Native Sugarberry (I think), and some pine. Some of the growing is in the ground, some in pots and, some...

How Does one Become a Bonsai Authority?

Smoke, thanks for your thoughtful reply. I assumed because Chris was practicing for the new talent competition he was relatively new, he seems to be a fast learner. My concern was that you might scare off meaningful future contributors by the partly inside/esoteric nature of your...

How Does one Become a Bonsai Authority?

Smoke,This seems like a rhetorical question and a projection of an existing philosophy onto a bonsai forum, meaning you taking your views about the world out on us. I see you as a leader on the forum, but the nature of how you ask questions usually makes me want to participate in the forum less...

Cool lil pine I found today

Im pretty sure everyone is right that it is Scrub/Virginia Pine and geographically that seems right, but I believe scrub pine typically have a shorter (1"-3") max needle length than loblolly (4"-9"). The long twisted needles on some of the growth is why I thought it could be loblolly. Loblolly...

Cool lil pine I found today

I would guess loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). How many needles per bundle? Cool Tree. If its loblolly I have heard and seen needle length being a problem for creating a small tree.

    Ebay bonsai sellers are thieves

We all know how well basing an economy on the whims and purchases of the ignorant works. Still I am quite grateful to all those who did not take advantage of my ignorance. I wonder how something grows strong, and wise, and long-lived; I will study a tree. Perhaps one wishes bonsai to be a...
