    False. I owe you nothing.

What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Ok... I didn't do this today. It was over the weekend. Repotted this chojubai into a nakawatari pot. The tree needs a haircut, but I'll wait a bit on that. I didn't have to take off too many roots, but I still want to play it safe.

Bonsai auctions and “imported” trees. Legal or not?

I completely understand my story - it is mine. You seem to refuse to believe it. Which is fine, that's your choice. But has zero relevance to whether the story is valid or not. I said "I owe you zero evidence" that does not mean I lack said evidence. You're an anonymous person on the internet...

Bonsai auctions and “imported” trees. Legal or not?

As stated in the response to Glacus - I confirmed with a current bonsai apprentice in Japan. He has first-hand knowledge. I will not name him because he isn't part of this conversation. I've talked to others that have confirmed the same. So yes, they are bringing trees from Japan to Vietnam (I...

Bonsai auctions and “imported” trees. Legal or not?

The 20 year ago thing is an article about a beetle infestation in Washington, and the beetle is non-native and there was a lot of destruction caused because of it. I referenced that as an example of why illegal imports are dangerous to the environment. I'm making 0% of this up. I contacted...

    Protecting Utah juniper in Louisiana

Utah junipers have the hardest/densest wood of the western juniper species. Far more resistant to rot that RMJ, sierra, and CA junipers. Lime sulfur will help. I doubt you'll need wood hardener.

Bonsai auctions and “imported” trees. Legal or not?

Uh, yes, the trees are being illegally imported. There is a buyer in Japan that is then moving them to another southeast Asian country (I know, but not calling it out - not the country's fault), and they are then moved to the US. There are a few family members involved on FB that often bid on...

    Mirai new nutrition concepts

Late to the discussion because I'm not here as often as I used to be, but I have a very good bonsai friend that's used Apical - he did not pay Mirai anything. I have no idea if there's any financial relationship between Apical and Mirai, and I don't really care. Mirai was working with Apical for...

Bonsai Central coupon code giveaway contest (ends Dec 15, 2023)

I am registered, and signed up for classes with Tyler and Young Choe. I've done a lot of juniper work over the years, so the kusamono class with Ms. Choe has me very intrigued.

    Acer cappadocicum?

Looks more like acer truncatum to me. Leaves do reduce, but not as much as other maples, so I'm told.

Japanese White Pine with Rotten Graft

You don't decandle JWP, unless you hate it and want it to die. They don't reliably back-bud like JBP do. So treat it more like a Scots pine. You can break vigorous candles in half, but don't completely remove them. This is a young tree, and if it's growing really strongly it would probably...

    HELP! Satsuki Azalea Dying

I did the dump and hope thing before and the tree almost died from staying too wet. You just have to be attentive to the watering need. I have no idea what the weather is like where you are in NZ, but given it's an island in the south Pacific I can guess at least a little. You're close to sea...

    HELP! Satsuki Azalea Dying

One more thought - adding an organic material will make it retain even more water, so you'll likely need to water even less. That doesn't mean you shouldn't add it, just be aware of the impact it will have so you can pay attention and adjust accordingly. I found that I wasn't good at watering...

    HELP! Satsuki Azalea Dying

My climate is hot (95 -100) and dry in the summer, and I live at about 4500' in elevation so water evaporates quickly. I'm not watering my shin nikko more than once a day, and some days I don't water it at all (also, it's in about 50/50 kanuma and pumice). You're overwatering it. When trees get...

Question about U.S. Kishu Shimpaku history

I use Sultan - it's a great miticide. I spray once in the spring, and once in the fall. Haven't had spider mite problems since. Make sure to follow the instructions on the label and wear a respirator at a minimum when you spray. I think it messes with mitochondria. Not something you want to...

Question about U.S. Kishu Shimpaku history

They have tons and tons of 'older' trees - guess I don't know how you define that word. Sure they aren't 200 year old trees (Chris and Lisa aren't that old ;) ), but there's plenty of large stock that's far more developed than small cuttings. I mean - I've seen shimpaku with 4+ inch caliper...

Telperion farms has lots and lots of non-grafted kishu and itoigawa junipers.

How to create a masterpiece juniper

This. Also, you can't always cut the entire shari at once, because you may be crossing over connections between roots and branches. So they are done in stages to limit the probability of badness happening.

Ulmus P. 'Hokkaido' clump - What would you do?

Before you can make any decision about ground layering or not, you need to repot and get a good look at the roots. There's likely more buried under there than you can see now. There's a good chance the front of the tree will change once you expose more roots, etc. No harm in cutting back like...

    When you just feel hollow

I lost my father to cancer almost 30 years ago. My mom had some sage advice at the time, which was needed by a 12 year old, but I think it applies to everyone. - It's ok to be sad. - There are some events in life that put things in real perspective - what really matters in the long run, and what...

Where do you find your soil?

I ordered 1/2 a pallet of Aoki akadama from Jonas this spring. Call or email him and see what freight would be. I split the order amongst bonsai friends/the local club and it drove the price of Aoki (premium stuff) down to what most people pay for regular akadama. If you have people to split the...

    Curl Leaf Mountain Mahogany Advice?

From when I've seen them in the mountains, the twigs always seemed brittle, so you'll probably want to wire carefully, and when the new growth is still green and not lignified yet. Just a guess though. I'm stoked to see how it does with the root work. The species has tons of potential.

    Looking for high-end unglazed pot

I'd suggest checking with Matt Reel. He recently acquired a very nice antique Chinese pot for a friend of mine for a tree that placed in the Artisan's Cup. The tree is super nice and needed the perfect pot, and he found it. With his connections over there, I'm sure he could find you something...
