    Pseudocydonia sinensis / Chinese quince

As usual, it's the first one to bud out. If they forecast some frost, I'll bring it in tha garage : 'Orange dream' has leafed out (the one I keep as a "patio tree"), but the one in a bonsai pot hasn't. One of my "Little Princess" = 'Mapi-no-machi hime' is showing a few leaves too. 19°C and...

    Zelkova from Cuttings

I remember planting cuts (5 mm, 1/4 inch) of Zelkova serrata in a pot, in february one year. I left them unattended in a shaded corner, and they rooted. I have a Zelkova sinense,1m80, 6 feet in a pot, will try it again.

Evolution of a Seiju elm from 2015

Good luck with your seiju, all mine died, including those I gave to my friends. I hope that the weather in Norh Toledo will suit them better, and that you'll take better care than we did here... Arriba ! (but carefully 😄)

    Favorite Maple Cultivar?

Yes, colours can vary both in spring and autumn dependeing on factors like soil composition (usually, the more acidic, the best the colours), humidity, temperature, etc. in a word summer stress.

    Pseudocydonia sinensis / Chinese quince

Crazy weather ! Only two nights with a slight frost (-1, -3°C) here, and today, December 25th, it's 13°C this afternoon and it was 9°c last night ! Buds are beginning to swell, while a couple of leaves are still on the branches. I've never seen that, so early : We often have frosts in...

    Winter 2023 Flu season

Getting vaccinated against Civid won't prevent you from getting it, but it will definitely keep you off the worst of it, death risks, long-time symptoms, etc. I haven't had Covid for the past years, and now some of my friends (un-vaccinated) have it. Sorry for them... Still kiss them on the...

    Do Roots Grow in Winter?

"32F" in the civilized world -😄- is 0°C, when water starts to freeze. Definitely no root activity at that temperature. Roots don't grow in a frozen soil, for some species they are even damaged if that stays for several days. I think the bottom temperature must be a bit higher for roots to be...

    Winter 2023 Flu season

I got vaccinated against both the flu and the latest-known variants of the covid virus. So far so good, not like some of my friends... OK, when I go to sleep, I can hear Bill Gates' voice telling me "5G is awesome!", but only when I rest my head on my right arm at night. When I turn on the...

    Do Roots Grow in Winter?

More or less... If they are in a mulch pile, the heat from the decomposing much can possibly keep the bottom roots in activity, so yes, they can grow a bit in winter as long as they do't get frozen.

    Birds

So what ? Kill or get killed ? I understand you have a different culture, but frankly, having a gun in your house won't prevent you from being shot any time, anywhere, in a country where owning a gun is "legal". Anyway, there are fewer and fewer birds around because of uis, human beings, so I...

    Birds

When I was a kid, we would stop every 200 km to wipe out the insects on the windshield. Now, I can travell 800 km without bothering. Here, the population of birds has fallen to 30% of what it was 20 years ago. I vote, but it's hard to find the right ballot between the deniers and the wokes...

    Birds

Understatement... 😄 It's not that I don't like them, but they have plenty of space, trees, by the Loire valley (some 200 metres down here, 656,168 feet, 218,723 yards). And when they're around, other species are moving away, so I like to have smaller birds in my small garden. I saw a couple...

    Birds

I don't shoot birds (no weapons in my home!), but I scare away the magpies so the others can peacefully dig in my bonsai soil 😄 But I understand invasive species must be culled, or even suppressed : rabbits, cats that returned to the wild, asian hornets, hammer-head worms, etc. etc. @Fidur ...
