Old cafeteria trays work well, sturdier and less expensive than the boot trays. Tom

American Hornbeam - USDA says it doesn't transplant well?

Brian, Here in Northern Kentucky and southern Ohio, we have members in our club (Bonsai Society of Greater Cincinnati) that grow and collect American Hornbeam with great success. I have not seen any problems with collecting, removing most heavy roots and repotting. If you collect in the spring...

    Mikawa pines dying

I have always had good luck with Kelthane if you can still fine it, my bottle is about 10 years old and looks like molassas now but it still works. I never had problems with spider mites on pines until a few years ago and Ted Matson caught it at a workshop we were doing. As well as the paper...

    Crushed Granite

Frank, I used to use a product called Texas Grit. It was a mixture of browns in color and fairly sharp. I was told that it is used for a couple of things, one being for sand blasting and the other for a mixture that contained epoxy and grit and covered sidewalks and patios. Mainly around...

    Cleaning Pine Bark

Thanks John, I guess there are no magical formulas to eliminate the moss and clean the trunk. I will try the vinegar and water approach. I thought that I saw something from Walter Pall that referenced an acid based cleaner. Tom

    Cleaning Pine Bark

I'm looking for some help on cleaning the bark on Pines without disturbing the bark. Most of my Pines seem to develop lichen and moss on the trunks even though they are in full sun. While this looks good on some of the trees I would rather see the true bark. I have heard of a few members...

    Mendocino Pygmy Cypress

Attila, I'm glad that you were able to pick up a couple of the cypress. It sounds like your two came from the same batch as mine. You are correct about the trunks. They look very old and have very nice deadwood. There are a couple of these trees in a recent book. I think it is North American...

    Mendocino Pygmy Cypress

Attila, Zack at Mendocino had a few more of these and was planning on taking them to the Golden State Convention where they will be vending in case you are planning on attending. I think it will be a nice Shohin size bonsai. The tree is 11" tall with a 1" trunk. Tom

    Mendocino Pygmy Cypress

Does anyone have any experience growing Mendocino Cypress? I was told to treat it as a shimpaku as far as pruning and styling and I plan on keeping it with my tropicals in a heated garage over the winter. I just ordered my first collected cypress from Zach at Mendocino Bonsai and it should get...

I would like to see some pictures..

Harry, This is a Colorado Spruce that was collected in 2003 or 2004. I repotted it 3 years ago and it is ready to be worked on in the spring of 2010. I think it is going to be a challenging tree to style. I had Marco look at it during a workshop in June of this year and he had some very good...

    Pumice vs lava rock.

Jason, Dry Stall is pumice, after sifting it, the size is a little bit larger than turface which is OK in soil mixes for smaller trees. Normally for my larger trees I use an imported Japanese pumice which is 3/8" - 1/2" in size. I normally mix it for my larger pines with about 60% akadama and...

Japanese white pine - nursery find

I think I would pass on this tree for bonsai, maybe to plant in the yard though. I doubt you would ever get any back budding down low. Tom

    Pumice vs lava rock.

Check at any local feed and grain stores for Dry Stall. This can be sifted and used with your normal bonsai soil. I found it at a Southern States store and it retails for about $10.00 for a 40# bag. I like to throw in the red lava rock too but I can't find it locally. Either one is a good...

    Mountain Hemlock

Very nice tree. I would wish I could grow them in Northern Ky. Is that the problem, they can't take warm nights? I talked to Dan Robinson about them the last time he was in Cincinnati and he said that he didn't know of anyone growing them this far south so he advised against purchasing one. If...

    Mid-American Bonsai Show

I drove up for the show about 4 years ago. Very nice show, vendors area and botanical gardens. If I remember right, I liked everything except the high parking fees at the botanical gardens. I also picked up some nice trees from Cass Bonsai while there. I think I will try to make it this year. Tom
