Advice for those new to Bonsai

That's too bad, the Victoria club is active and informative. If you ever find yourself on the island you should come by. Club meets on the third Monday of each month.

Black masses on trunk of Chinese Elm

Wonderful tree, looks ancient. Glad to see someone on the island with some high quality trees! Thanks for sharing. Waiting for some better weather to take some pictures of my elm post leafdrop.

    Big Elm

Worth the wait in my mind. Any time you save (maybe a growing season or two) is not worth the potential dieback.

Black masses on trunk of Chinese Elm

I am happy with it so far, here are a few pictures taken about a week ago, as the fall colors were in full effect. I will add a few pictures soon of the fully defoliated tree (closeups of the bark). My current plan of action is to wire soon, and repot in the spring, but i'm open to suggestions...

    Acer macrophyllum powdery mildew

Good to know. I will work on the preventative measures next season. I am organically inclined myself, but willing to use a chemical solution if needed. Thanks for the insight!

    Acer macrophyllum powdery mildew

Hello, I have noticed over the past month a white fuzzy fungus develop on my acer macrophyllum leaves. I did some research and found this (https://pnwhandbooks.org/node/3069/print) which suggests the use of fungicide. I have never used fungicide before, and was wondering if anyone had any...

    Spring time in Kiwi land

Just updated my profile! I am rather new to Bonsai, but I now have along with my j. maples, a Chinese elm, spruce, and some large leaf maples. A humble, but growing collection :).

    New JBP...potential?

It sure does. Big old trunk, and healthy foliage is more than enough for this to be called good material :). Post an update in the spring when you do branch selection.

    Fall Fertilizing

I was told that this time of year the best thing to do is stop using nitrogen fertilizer, and only use 0-10-10 for root strength. Can anyone tell me if this is advice is correct?

    Acer Palmatum material find

I appreciate all the detailed feedback I have recieved. I am going to wait on my decision until spring arives. At that time I will decide wether I see the value in air layering or to instead repot and trunk chop. Thanks again and I will be sure to update you all on the progress.

    Acer Palmatum material find

I found great value in what both you and Beebs shared with me. I didn't find it too lecture like, but to each their own. I think every one on this forum who has shared information with me means well.

    Acer Palmatum material find

Great advice I will follow this closely. However I would like to get some air layers off this tree prior to trunk chopping, so would I be able to repot and air layer in this spring? Or would that be too much stress. Thanks for your insight!
