What are your plans with your CMBonsai trees?

As a bit of an experiment, and because I only had two more grow bags, I potted 2 of my elm clumps into a 70% organic (potting soil), 30% inorganic (perlite and sifted pine bark (I know bark is organic, I just mean bigger particles for aeration )) in grow bags, and 3 of them in pure bonsai soil...

Ever seen a thread graft from a cross section?

Yup, that's correct! The parent branch would've come in from below in the pic and then the grafted branch is the one on top. Definitely grew well, a little too well that I missed my wiring windows and now it's too straight 😭😂 That whole tree is going through a redesign since the top died off, I...

Ever seen a thread graft from a cross section?

A couple of years ago I did a thread graft on a Trident maple for a back branch. Last year I unfortunately had to chop the top of the tree off right above the branch I'd grafted, and I just so happen to saw right through the original branch. We all know by common sense that the old branch stays...

    Japanese maple air layer progression

That's an option I hadn't considered. I'll have to go out and look at it through that lens later tonight. Thanks for the idea! No yeah you're totally correct. I would let it grow enough above the layer point before doing it, I was just seeing if it's worth waiting or if I should just saw that...

    Japanese maple air layer progression

What the smallest you can ring the bark for an air layer? I'm thinking instead of just cutting off the apex on my previous post, it would make a nice little tree if I could air layer it but it would have to be a tiny ring. Would it just bridge it and not layer?

    Japanese maple air layer progression

Thanks! Yeah I do realize that the sun gets way too intense here for J Maples, I have it on my covered deck that gets morning sun and then very dappled shade the rest of the day instead of on my benches with the rest of my trees

    Japanese maple air layer progression

I never really found an answer as to why the newest leaves were coming out deformed but the general consensus is that it's probably water related. Luckily it rained pretty hard a couple of days ago so I have 2 5-gallon buckets full of water saved just for this tree and plan to set up a rain...

    CM BONSAI——-My Garden Activities

@cmeg1 great work! Quick question, were the last set of pines you put on ebay sown this year or last year?

    Winged Elm - Oak Style

I was finally able to take a picture of this tree without wires. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I probably could've left them on longer because they weren't biting in yet but I wanted to be sure. The only one I left wired was the very bottom branch I want almost touching the ground...

    Winged Elm - Oak Style

Thanks for the input! I went ahead and removed the infected leaves and threw them out. Yeah this tree seems to put on crazy amount of roots, unfortunately it's very one sided though, which I plan to correct next repot and hopefully set up a nice nebari. I appreciate the kind words, I'm...

    Winged Elm - Oak Style

Update on this elm It was the last one of my trees to bud out this spring. When I bought it last (early) summer, it didn't really grow at all for the rest of the season either, not sure if they're correlated but it's an interesting observation. Anyways, the drainage was pretty bad so when it...

Yard tree fungal issues affecting bonsai?

Thanks for the input! Any ideas on how to treat? Just leave as is and hope the Insfuse does it's job?

Yard tree fungal issues affecting bonsai?

I appreciate the responses man! Yeah I'm not expecting the deformed leaves fix themselves, more than anything I just want it to start growing again lol I gave it Biogold right before this started happening so I think I'm good there

Yard tree fungal issues affecting bonsai?

I would say of all of the shoots, the last pair of leaves of about 50-55% are deformed. The rest look ok but the whole tree stopped growing regardless of if the last leaves are deformed or not. Of the 50-55%, only the last pair of leaves is deformed, the rest of the branch looks normal

Yard tree fungal issues affecting bonsai?

See originally I thought it was the drought from last summer because I didn't water them as much as I should have. But now seeing the black marks on the trunk, I feel like it's more fungal since if it was just drought I don't think it'd look like that. They're cutting them down in a dew days...

Yard tree fungal issues affecting bonsai?

I'm currently renting a house which has (had 😭) two large trees, one an oak and the other I'm not sure about. Last fall, they both lost their leaves like normal, the oak maybe a bit early, but nothing crazy. However over the winter I started noticing bark peeling and branches falling during high...

Nice find! Love being being surprised by better nebari under the soil 😎😜 that's crazy how much was under there!

    Japanese maple air layer progression

I purchased this Japanese maple last month and will be using this thread to document its progression. The tree was an air layer separated last year. This is how I received it: It started budding out about a week later so I removed the top. 5 -.75 inch of soil to see if I could get by with...

Water column on super thin pots

Thanks for the replies everyone but it really isn't a drainage issue, it has plenty of drainage with inorganic soil and was repotted a couple of days ago. It has more to do with what @rockm and @Shibui are taking about. Gotcha, thanks a lot! I was mainly worried about the roots sitting in water...

Water column on super thin pots

I know that the Water column in pots behaves differently depending on the depth of the pot. The taller the pot, the more gravity is acting on the water, and the better it drains and the smaller the water table left behind is. What happens when a pot is so thin that it doesn't really drain at...

Do you happen to have pictures of your mobile set up? Sounds interesting since I also need to chase the sun through the season

    Trident in ground for growth

I agree that akadama is for refinement, so what are you using as substrate? It's hard to tell from the pics but it looks rather organic? That's great growth in just a few years!

    Bunjin Pine Progression

I recently purchased this black pine which I'm planning on styling into bunjin style later this summer. I'm on the lookout for a shallower circular pot to repot into this spring since I think this one is too bulky but no luck yet. I plan on updating this thread with progress in the future. I...

    Winged Elm - Oak Style

Thanks again @Tieball, I'll leave it for now then and let the tree guide in that healing. I really wouldn't mind it being hollowed out as I think it would create more age and interest in the tree but you're right that if anything, it's better for the tree to react the way it needs to like in...
