    Help with identification

i agree, I just wondered if it was a dwarf cultivar only because the trunk looks more “mature” than other red cedars I’ve seen of the same size.

    Help with identification

Hey everyone! Was gifted this little guy but I’m unsure if it’s a cedar or some kind of juniper cultivar? Any help would be much appreciated thank you!

    Feels like Christmas!

Oh ya! Your definitely in stewartia friendly territory. Were you from the Sacramento area?

    Feels like Christmas!

Now... I’ve been searching everywhere, going to all my local nurseries and calling ones farther away, all in the hopes of finding a stewartia. I keep getting the same response, that they’re too finicky for our weather here in Sacramento so they just don’t bring them in. Finally found a nursery...

Beech & elm - coming or going?

Yup! Did just that. I’m trying not to fuss with it too much but u feel like it should be doing something by now. Guess we’ll just wait and see.

Beech & elm - coming or going?

Well, (apologies if this is a redundant post but I didn’t find anything...) coming to the end of spring cleaning and thinking I might have another casualty. This European beech just hasn’t leafed out. I did the scratch test and there is still green, but I don’t know if it’s on it’s way out or...

    Dwarf strawberry tree

I know! When I saw them I had to pick one up. The marina is beautiful, the bark isn’t red yet like it’s bigger brethren but I’m hoping as it gets bigger it will. You can’t see it in this pic but the base has awesome flare to it. Do you know if they backbud on old wood?

    Dwarf strawberry tree

Thanks :) I couldn’t pass up the ginkgo! I almost did but went back because....why not! Plus the leaves were smaller than the other dwarf variety that was there and this one was the only one - a mariken. Can’t wait to work with it.

    I couldn’t stop...

The not a contest contest gave me a really big itch and so I scratched. These aren’t my contest trees. I’ve had these for awhile now, I got them when I first started my bonsai journey. Finally pulled em out and cut em oback, they were getting pretty overgrown and had some die back anyway so it...

MissRomsMami “this is not a contest” tree(s) entry

I went back out and studied it for a minute... I never really noticed the inverse, or more like it never struck me as bad as far this tree is concerned. But I see what you mean now that you’ve said it. Maybe I can pick your brain for a second? I took some more pictures, hopefully better ones...

    Cork oak - a goner?

If it was, it would have only been for an hour or 2 in a random night. I’m in Northern California, Sacramento specifically, we don’t get to freezing or below very often.

    Cork oak - a goner?

Great idea, thank you! I just bought some pine bark to start mixing my own soil so we’ll see how it goes!

MissRomsMami “this is not a contest” tree(s) entry

I really Iike the one in the 2nd photo, it’s exactly how I would like that left branch to be angled at. Do you think it’s possible I can achieve that amount of bend out of my branch? It’s almost a whole 90 degree bend...

MissRomsMami “this is not a contest” tree(s) entry

I agree. Looking back at it, even if I cut back, I feel like I would have to pot it up at a slant, towards the right, just so it doesn’t seem to go perfectly straight after the nice curve and flare below it.

I love it, especially how much character the deadwood has. Really nice.

    Cork oak - a goner?

Thank you! Ya after I took th picture I removed all the weeds. It had been sitting behind quite a few other bigger trees and wasn’t getting much sun, definitely not direct. I didn’t even notice those buds! That’s awesome, and reassuring. Seems like it’s oretty root bound, is it ok to repot...

MissRomsMami “this is not a contest” tree(s) entry

Ya I’ve realized they’re quite rigid. If you look at the 2nd picture I posted, 2nd one of the “after” pruned photo, you’ll see a closer look at the trunk and the branch on the left side. There’s a yellow leaf that looks almost like a perfect dot. That branch I definitely want to lower and it’s...
