    My bonsai journey

Phew today it was the turn to repot my biggest tree, a Japanese Maple (var. Sangokaku) in a multitrunk style. The raw material came from a nursery and graft was an eyesore so I decided to air layered 8 years ago. The first try was a failure (also my first airlayer) so in the next year I tried...

Photo of my shohin Ash Tree leafing out. The compounded leaves look wonderful at this stage. I feel like the photo don’t do justice and in my opinion is an underrated specie.

    My bonsai journey

Bonus post! Another alder prebonsai I’ve been developing since a pencil size seedling 6 years ago. On the design I’m not sure what to do though. Trunk is quite straight and flavorless haha and the only salvable thing is the nebari. Time will answer me.

    My bonsai journey

Today I did a repot on a English Oak (Querqus Robur) yamadori. 4 years from the ground and now that is well established I put it in his ceramic pot. Tons of fine roots! I want to grow the left trunk and make a slightly taller apex.

    My bonsai journey

I got to play with this A. Burgerianum after eating lunch. I had 30 min to do the repot so the stakes were high haha. This is a little maple root over rock from seed 7 years ago. Root placement was messy in the beginnings and now there are a few gaps between the rock and roots. Not ideal The...

And this hawthorn has a lot of potential. Almost 20cm trunk thickness with great movement that divides into two trunks. You could go for an expansive canopy mimicking a ancient oak. I’m afraid of kill it to begin with so I don’t know if some day I will pull it out.

    My bonsai journey

What's the most you have ever spent on a single tree? (finished or pre-bonsai or yamadori or raw stock)

Most I’ve expended is a measly 50€ for a Acer Palmatum Sangokaku material. Totally worth it 👍

I haven’t tried doing a leaf removal. Do you cut to two leaves the new flush of growth after the hardening and then remove those two?

    My bonsai journey

Thank you for the compliment! Yeah it feels a little cluttered and should eliminate some branch. Sometimes also wonder if I should remove the first left branch because it’s too low but Im hesitant. Yeah the nebari has been worked out every repot like a maple and improved a lot but it has a...

    My bonsai journey

Today in the interval between work shifts I managed to cram a little repot that was necessary giving the new foliage already setting. It’s a little rose I made through an air layer because I want to make use of the white pot that was intended for a pomegranate shohin but died 3 years ago. I saw...

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

This is another of my oaks (Quercus robur). I collected it 2 years ago and the buds are about to burst open. I’m still unsure on what to do with it. Do I want a larger tree growing the right trunk or go for a more compact one? 🤔 What are your thoughts on this? (In the next repot I will adress...

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

It’s an deciduous species? If it the case you could use the bag method to sweat the tree and preserve humidity. Even if it’s used mainly on hawthorns I readed that you can apply it to other deciduous. Someone correct me if I’m being wrong.

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

This is a lovely shohin of English Oak (Querqus robur). It’s starting to ramify pretty fine and last season the leaves were tiny, like 1,5 -2cm. (Sorry for the mess with the wiring 😅)

    Japanese maple raft project

Do you intend in the future to make one of the trunks (left one or middle) a bit taller? I feel a little of height difference between the trunk would look good. Amazing job btw !

    Air Layering Japanese maple

I have managed to successfully layer a Sango Kaku. The first attempt was a failure and I think it was for the moment chosen; almost at the beginning of summer. In the second attempt I did it 3 weeks after the buds sprout and I separated the air layer at the beginning of spring of the following...

    Stubborn aerial roots on ficus

I leave a video of how to force aerial roots. It's in Spanish so I'll summarize it. Before applying the technique recommends that if you don’t repot in a long time (and the pot is full of roots) the tree tend to emits more aerial roots. As for the technique, it is recommended to use the drill...
