    Evergrn Gardenwrks... thoughts?

Acer Sazanami are not a dissected variety. However @Deep Sea Diver is correct thus won't make a great mame the first internode is too long and straight. It might be ok for a shohin. I have one of these from Brent in 2021 in 4 inch pot. I have been growing it out since. I might try a few air...

    Andrea Meriggioli's Bonsai Maples Book

I have both. Andrea's book is way more in depth. If you can only have one choose his. New England Bonsai Gardens is going to be getting some more copies soon. Don't know the cost but my guess is 140-150.

    Japanese Maple Styling Advice

You are still in the trunk building stage. How big do you want the tree? The first node above the roots will have dome control on that on general because that is the lowest your first branch can be without grafting. You need to plan around that. The right branch has a short first internode and...

Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) from seedling

It depends on the size and mix a little bit. My approach has been to plant the seeds in a flat or pot and then move to pots year two. At that point most can go into a 4 or even a 6. I make clumps at that point too so it reduces the amount of pots or matbe some proto-forests. A few runts might go...

Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) from seedling

Any time you grow a seedling it will just be plain Acer palmatum. Named cultivars are clones of each other. In some cases the seedlings will have very similar traits to the parent other times they won't. Seedlings need appropriately sized pots. It is good that you put it in well draining soil...

    Young Bark Color

Does anyone know what determines the young bark color on some Japanese maple? I have two Katsura that both leaf out with the orange/yellow typical leaves. Ordered a the same time from Brent at Evergreen Garden works. One the new bark is primarily green the other is more red. The local nursery...

Local nursery New England Bonsai Gardens had Andrea Merrigioli to run a demo and workshop. Missed out on the work shop but the demo was great. The tree was fairly light on lower branches so he opted to start an air layer on the top as a future clump and grafted deshojo branches to the lower.

    Making chopsticks

This seems to be repeated many times on the internet but what is missed is they are talking about when used as reinforcement in concrete. This can be confirmed by searching for the base properties of materials. Steel depending on grade has tensile strength in excess of 50,000 lbs per square in...

    Chinese Elm not losing leaves

Central Massachusetts here. My seiju elms are still green. My regular Chinese elm lost its leaves a few weeks ago. This is pretty typical for me. Some years are earlier than others but it is always the last trees to drop leaves.

It sort of depends on your local weather and sun exposure. The key will be to keep the space from getting too hot or too cold. That might include manipulating the windows and vents.

    Larch Air layer

Mine bridged the area I ringed the bark. So I cut it off without the layer to keep the primary tree moving forward.
