The "This is Not a Contest" Contest

Totally forgot about this to be honest! Can't even remember which tree I picked so almost certainly haven't done anything with it. Haven't really done much bonsai the lat 2 years - kids! If it's the tree I think it is then I was looking at it the other day, needs complete re-wiring and...

    Indoor lighting questions!

Yeah that was my preference from the start but wasn't totally against the idea of a panel or maybe a tube. I guess it could work if I hide it with something just in front of it or angle it back slightly away/into the alcove. That SunBlaster @JeffS73 linked looks pretty good. If it's a warmish...

Wild trees for bonsai 2019 (UK)

I collected these 2 Hawthorn stumps towards the end of winter last year, the root spread isn't too bad on one, a little one sided on the other. You can't see it in the picture as I buried them both pretty deep. I used the bag-sweating technique and keep them wrapped in a black bag right through...

    Indoor lighting questions!

Yeah I'd like a Monstera, would probably fit that spot nicely. I wouldn't mind another big Ficus though. Yeah I would most likely set it to turn on from say 10pm - 5am and give it a 7 hour light boost when we're not really in the room. It would still get a few hours of lower light levels...

    Indoor lighting questions!

Looking for a bit of advice regrading indoor lighting as I have never looked into it until now. I'm not looking to create a typical grow-bed kind of setup. I had a 5' ficus tree in a pot behind my TV in the living room, raised up slightly so most of the tree was visible and it almost reached...

    Collecting 2020

Most of the time I can just remember it's location but if there are a bunch all growing near each other I just tie a bit of paracord around the base or something subtle.

    Collecting 2020

Went to dig a couple of the Hawthorn I had marked last year and after starting to follow the trunk down soon realised neither would be very good - super one sided root growth on one and the other had a huge second trunk buried 6 inches down which I hadn't known was there before. Presumably the...

First forest attempt - Dawn redwood

Yup I need to hang something up to photo against. The plain board I used was a bit of an experiment using the dodgy lighting to get some funky shadow play. Should probably stick to something a bit more tried and tested! 30cm oval plastic pot I grabbed from eBay. Don't actually own any 'proper'...

First forest attempt - Dawn redwood

Really like that first one @LanceMac10! My plan depending on how this one goes is to create a much larger and more dense one like yours eventually. Decided to start with something smaller as it was far more fiddly that I thought it would be to wire the trees into position even loosely. Did...

First forest attempt - Dawn redwood

Yeah I wasn't sure about the stone, I had taken some pictures before I added it. The plan had been to find a couple more and make a line of them to make a little cliff-edge kind of scene to highlight the higher/lower areas but couldn't find anything suitable. The other idea I had was to make...

First forest attempt - Dawn redwood

Thanks for the tip, I'll have another go at picturing it and see if it helps!

First forest attempt - Dawn redwood

Finally got around to sorting out the big shed at the end of the garden in our new place, set up a table and got decent lighting out there so I now have somewhere nice to do some work in the evenings once the kids are in bed! I've been eager to make something with these little dawn redwoods I...

    A Large Kojo-no-mai

Wicked little tree! I haven't had time to do much with any of mine lately and my kojo no mai hasn't grown even a fraction of the speed of yours!

I don't think I used any rooting hormone on it because I can't find it since I moved house 😂

Wild trees for bonsai 2019 (UK)

Yeah I had thought that when I remembered you posted the Heron's video the other week with two necked up against each other. I figure for now I'll just nurse them and give them a little more space hoping they'll actually push some new growth in the Spring and then start playing with them the...

Wild trees for bonsai 2019 (UK)

So it turns out the field might be a little more cursed than I thought. I've dug stuff from in the woods around the field and the roots tend to be more shallow and radial. The field has such light loose soil, and the meadow grass on top sucking up the moisture even on an area probe to flooding...

Wild trees for bonsai 2019 (UK)

😂 No one questions a high-vis jacket! This particular place is real quiet, see the occasional dog walker and there was a couple of rough sleepers at one point living in the woods but they moved on leaving a huge mess I slowly cleared up, but apart from that it's nice and peaceful... mostly foxes...

Wild trees for bonsai 2019 (UK)

This field keeps turning up little treats! This one was completely surrounded by tall grass, noted it's location but may try collect in the next couple of weeks rather than in spring depending on available time. Might be better to collect in spring now though having lost all its leaves? Given...

    Rescue mission; possible fatality

I was looking at this again a few days ago and wondering about angled cuts between two nodes... I would be leaving a little more above the line for die back. Can I get away with something like this below, or will it just die off to the lower node?

The air layer on this shishigashira made the autumn colour change pretty cool! I'm guessing the interruption of chemical flow has something to do with it.

    European Beech material

Glad I read this thread! I've got a couple of copper beech I picked up a few months ago still sat in nursery pots - I had planned on doing some initial root work and sticking them in the ground in spring as buds move. As mentioned above I kinda figured beech was basically like hornbeam which...

    2019 From seed

Out of the seeds I started this year I had 2 Acer Nomura and 7 small leaf maple germinated. Still got the seed trays so will be putting them back under a pane of glass outside for the winter for more stratification, hopefully get some more pop in the spring!

Thoughts on Peter Chan? (Herons Bonsai)

In due course mate 😆 I moved house in may and had a baby a week later so my bonsai time has been essentially keeping stuff alive, weed and pest free since then... fortunately almost all my stuff is in a state where growing freely and neglected isn't going to set anything back. Hoping by late...

    Japanese Maple material

Yeah those are nice grafts! You seem to sell your work pretty easily anyway whether it's grafted or not. I'll try get a couple of pictures of the coral bark I got recently. I actually got 2 - one for my garden to go in a sodding great stone pot which I've drilled the bottom out of for free...

    Japanese Maple material

Hmm could be?! Hard to tell, if it is grafted it's not at all obvious in a way I'd be bothered enough to ground layer it especially if you're selling it on. Nice radial spread as well already! Your other picture reminded me I really need to give my greenhouse a good clean sometime before spring 🤣
