Not sure where in S FL you are but if you get a chance to head over to Ft Myer's you should stop by Wigert's. They have a huge selection of trees that happily grow in our wonderful climate :) Both Ficus and BRT do great. Tamarind, Oak, Bald Cypress, Elm... you have a lot to choose from and...

Go native. Mesquite and palo verde. I spent most of my life in Tucson until moving to Florida 5 years ago. When I go back for a visit this fall i'm planning on bringing back a bunch of seed pods and some small collected trees.

My grandma was kid during the depression and never fully trusted banks. She always kept money stuffed in coffee can though out her house. When we had to finally mover her, there were cans of money hidden all over the place. But dang, I never did check the TV ;)

Well, I'm on the other side of Florida, south of Tampa and I repotted two about a week ago and they are both fine. So I think your tree will be fine.

In Florida, I've never bothered to air layer Bougainvillea. Just stick the cutting in the dirt and they grow very happily.
