    The 2024 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Old junipers usually dont have many fine roots close in. The pic shows it has very few roots at all. As the above poster mentioned, dont remove any green yet. If it survives, it will jettison a lot of the green as is.

    Shohin noble fir (Abies procera)

I like noble firs (and subalpine firs) - some of my favs. Good luck. IMHO - i might (if mine) plant in the ground for two or three years to let it fatten up, while keeping those lower branches wired and pruned short (while growing a sacrificial leader). But thats just me. Good luck.

    The Hemlock (Tsuga) Discussion THREAD.

Grafting evergreens is a lot harder than grafting apples and pears etc (i know from personal experience). Having said that, if time isnt an issue, I would suggest root pruning that hemlock in the very early spring. Then wait a full year before transplanting it the following spring. Better chance...

Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis) aka lovely fir

The foilage naturally grows "flat" instead of from all sides of the branch. (Ie, the needles are on one plain as if pressed flat. Like yews.). I find it hard to make nice "pads" with it. :/ But i love the bark.

Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis) aka lovely fir

One of my fav trees around here - but the flat foilage makes it a bit tricky imho.

    Seedling Cutting true fir

Never heard amabalis fir called lovely fir before. Up here in BC we call ‘em pacific fir or simply amabalis fir. You going to be root chopping them and then treating them as cuttings, as the title suggests. Hope you tell us how it goes. I’ve wanted to do that for a while now with amabalis...

    Is fraser fir any good?

Should be able to treat it like any other true fir. Abies that is.

    Balsam Fir From Tree Stump

Good luck. Evergreens don’t generally like bare rooting. But young ones are more resilient than old ones to it. Make sure to include some of the original soil from around its parent trees to inoculate the soil with fungus.

    Alnus Incana (Grey Alder) #1

Nice. It’s shaping up well. Sadly mine didn’t survive the winter. Never had an alder not survive a winter. :s

That we can still easily get minus five to minus ten C here, and that there should still be another 6 weeks of winter.

    Progression of Acer macrophyllum D

Nice work. I’ve got a big leaf maple in the works. How far have you been able to reduce the leaves? I’ve got them to under two inches in the past, but this year I’ve stuck her in the ground to fatten up so they’re huge (as they should be).
