    “New” maple start

Right, was referring to the previous post about one of its layers.

    “New” maple start

Yes and I’ve been the tormentor! Thanks for the confirmation, I’ll see how it goes.

    “New” maple start

I think I stepped on my own post and made it confused, or no one had any thoughts. Maybe I’d have better let it lie.

    “New” maple start

This layer will, and does, look much different. I unwisely did not repot last spring and It became quite rootbound with poor drainage during the summer. When I traveled for work for just two days the weather got hot and tho my husband watered he did not water enough and the main trunk above the...

    “New” maple start

Well here we are after over 8 years and many layers, for better or worse. I removed an ill-conceived attempt at an upright crown last week and am left with this. I like this angle if I can get it into a pot with it. I considered looping the apex back around and up using part of the candelabra...

    Oak Cascade or not

No, not entirely. And I’m talking about shapes here not species characteristics. You have to listen to the tree. As someone else mentioned you could grow out a low branch at an angle to start it down the path of a cascade but to try to simply bend it downward will never end looking right.

    Oak Cascade or not

Regardless of the appropriateness of this style for an oak, there is nothing about this material that suggests it wants to be a cascade.

    Thickening hornbeam apex

Thanks both of you. As with all my trees I learn as I go. I continued wiring and refining after that pic but I don’t think it looks much different. Another pic in a few years. Hopefully I’ll get some better ramification.

    Thickening hornbeam apex

It’s making slow progress. Before and after winter pruning and wiring this year.

    New auction maples

Here’s the second one. The idea was for something like the short rounded dissectums grown in front lawns or patio pots. Similar challenges as the first one. It prefers to bud from the trunk than from a branch. But very flexible. The apex still needs to be grown from one of the three branchlets...

    New auction maples

About time for an update on these puppies. Only six short years later and the first one looks like this.Pretty slow development compared with other trees. Branch development and ramification is a challenge with both of them. But I like where it is. Took the other one in a different direction and...

    Another stolen tree

Just learned today that the tree was returned! First time I’ve heard of a recovery of a stolen tree. Was bit dry but they think it will survive.

One of my best pics yet - trident in autumn

Thanks all. These are the offering pics Starting with the original front. The nebari is better from that side (of course) but the trunk is a bit grotesque. Turns out I’ve only been working in it since 2020.

One of my best pics yet - trident in autumn

Trident maple in Koyo pot. I didn’t grow the trunk but I’ve created the upper third and crown from scratch over about 5 yrs and put it in the current pot. It still needs a lot of branch development but at this moment in time the leaves make the shape exactly what I want. It will never look...

    Another stolen tree

I worked on this tree a few times in the last couple of years. We had just layered the top off which really improved its proportions, and we were all excited about its future development. They do have a security system but I can’t comment on what it showed. Martha posted that they just want...

    Senbazuru Satsuki

There was a thorny rose in there that was also a victim so there was literally a bloody mess.

    Senbazuru Satsuki

It‘s branches were severely pruned back courtesy of a mad deer that got into my storage area and damaged a lot of trees. It’s not in danger of dying but waiting to see which branches will send out foliage now. Yours is looking good!

    Finally Arakawa!

That is a nice one I wouldn’t mind trying! But it’s not this.

    Finally Arakawa!

Maybe, but I was wrong naming this thread as this isn’t what is typically known as Arakawa, although it is ‘rough bark’ in the generic sense. Read through the first part of the thread. If yours was cutting grown it could be same, but I know they also have a bunch of Arakawa seedlings.

    Finally Arakawa!

Since I’ve updated a few other threads recently may as well do this one also. I’m proceeding assuming this tree is Ibo Nishiki. it’s responding well to bonsai practices and cuttings root extremely easily, and bark up very quickly. The first branch is well developed but the others aren‘t much...

    “New” maple start

And this is what became of the awkward first branch. 3” tall. I’m going to have to uncover the base and see the roots this spring to decide what I’m going to do with it. I had put some wire on them when the layer was separated but can’t quite remember what they were like.

    Semi-cascade palmatum

Thank you and yes we still have the cat. I’ve killed her 8 times now for things like this, including doing exactly the same to a different tree, and yet she’s still here. I don’t understand it.

    Small palmatum

Thanks. The pot is Jim Jenigan and actually rather nice although it is too big. It’s been in it so long it’s difficult to picture it in any other. Unfortunately Jim isn’t making any more. I keep looking. People have been saying it needs to tilt more left for years. I may increase it...

    Small palmatum

Just an updated photo. It’s progressing I think, hopefully in a good direction but I’m learning as I go of course. The apex area is challenging.
